Posted - Jul 23 2014 : 10:50:35 AM My Mom is elderly and living alone...doing well but using too much salt (salt is in almost everything). She ended up with congestive heart failure and fluid filling her lungs called pulmonary edema. After a second bout of it and hospitalization, she has been here with us since the 9th til she gets her strength back, change her way of eating, weighing and blood pressures each day.
I have been cooking much healthier with no salt added and using Spice Hunter spices (no salt ones) and measuring items that do have salt to keep her allotment under 2000mg each day. I am finding I even feel better, but to tell you the truth, I need some tasty recipes so that my list does not become monotonous. If you have any, I would really appreciate them.
BTW, if you don't already, look at the back of packaged or canned goods for the sodium. We all look at the calories or fat content ...but oh my... what an eye opener. Salt is tasty, but it is one of the chief causes of heart disease and strokes, affects diabetes and many other diseases that none of us need. Any ideas?

Posted - Jul 27 2014 : 11:46:50 AM I don't know how many use canned soups, such as Cambell's mushroom or cream of chicken soups, but I looked at the sodium content at the low sodium mushroom soup which for 1/2 cup was well over 650 mg (a 1/4 of daily allowance for a healthy person for 3000mg/day.) The lowest was Cr of Chicken Healthy Request is 410mg for 1/2 concentrate. I am amazed when I look at the back of cans. Regular Chicken Noodle is 890 for 1/2 cup concentrate and less in the kid friendly "Healthy Kids- Chicken & Stars." Are you concerned for your own hearts or that of your children's?
A nurse finally paying attention to not only calories and fats...but sodium too....
