DH is getting very excited about home brewing beer. A friend of ours used to do this and recently moved away and gave Chris some beer making items as he said he no longer wanted to do that.

The reason I am posting this is Chris's birthday is coming up and I know absolutely nothing about beer making, so... I wondered if anyone knew anything about what he will need so I can surprise him with a few things to add to his supplies. (He knows what he needs, but I have not very good at being sneaky about asking him what he might need to surprise him on his birthday without giving away my plan)

I am about to show my ignorance, because I bet these items have technical names, but this is what he got from his friend:

Three really large glass bottles
1 big C02 tank
1 keg
1 case of empty bottles

Does anyone have suggestions on what he might need from your own experience, or have any awesome recipes I could pass on to him?

Thank you in advance! :)

My dad is a very good home brewer. He said get him "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Pappazian. He says it takes one through the process from beginner to skilled to expert and is very well written.

Also, a couple good places to get supplies and kits are Midwest Brewing

or Northern Brewing

Both places have good deals on shipping.

Having a DH who brews beer is really great. My dad cannot make toast but he brews wonderful beer. After drinking his I just cannot drink the 3/2 pee they sell in stores. The neat thing is, he makes it and you get to drink it. Have fun.

Thanks Rachel and Erin!! I will look into a kit for sure and the information about the ale pail, air lock caps and capper are very helpful!

I did find him a book on Amazon, so hopefully he will learn a lot from that as well.

Erin, what kind of wine do you make? My mom is making rose hip and Service Berry wine this year, this is her first time making it. I haven't tried making wine yet, but it seems like it would be fun and once Chris gets all his brewing stuff, maybe I will try it. :)

My husband has home brewed a few times, and we have friends that come over almost weekly and make wine with us. You're going to need an ale pail (big 6 gallon plastic pail with a lid that holds an air lock), an air lock, bottle caps and a capper, and probably just a kit to get started. I'm not an expert, and I didn't really help with the beer-making, but the wine uses a lot of the same equipment. If you have a brew supply store in your area, definitely check it out. People that work at those places are usually very helpful and knowledgeable. Good luck! :)

You might want to check out Midwest Brewing and Brewhaus, they have supplies and kits for different brewing needs. Their prices are reasonable but I have not yet ordered from them (can't make up my mind what I want to start with).
