Posted - Nov 21 2014 : 6:13:12 PM Well, my family and I went 100 percent organic several years back, except for a few things that were hard to find. Turkey was one. Well this year, we got ourselves an organic turkey! It's just the three of us for Thanksgiving, so it wasn't too big a splurge. Can't wait to eat it. I bet it will taste better than the conventional kind. Does anyone else agree?

Posted - Dec 02 2014 : 2:58:16 PM Same here. The meat is leander and there's no fat. I had a 10 pounder as well and we got 7 more meals out of it. It was delicious, but I'm ready for some beef!

Posted - Dec 02 2014 : 2:48:52 PM That's a good question...I found there was so much more meat on my little 10 pound bird than on a much larger conventional one. Anyone?

Posted - Dec 02 2014 : 01:52:41 AM Turkey for breakfast works :)
I have a question for you gals :) I was really hoping to get an organic bird this year but we weren't able to. I usually purchase a 20 pound turkey, we like to send guests home with some and have leftovers. What size organic bird would be comparable concerning yield? I am hoping that next year we can do this.

Posted - Nov 28 2014 : 05:10:04 AM Oh. My. goodness! That was the BEST turkey we've ever eaten! It was so delicious! The organic turkey did not have the "after taste" that a conventional bird has. There was so much meat! I cooked it the way I always have, and it came out so juicy. I used my own herbs that I grew from seed and dried. The kitchen smelled delicious. It truly was the best turkey dinner we've ever eaten. I will never buy a conventional bird again!

That is not surprising, and good info to pass on. Going organic, we felt better than ever. When I eat non-organic, I do feel it.

Posted - Nov 25 2014 : 09:22:38 AM We found organic turkey at CostCo this year but only the $50-60 were left. I ended up going to the local Amish owned store and bought a Hutterite turkey for half the price. The Hutterite colony is actually nearby so it's basically a local, natural turkey! Anyway, I have to eat organic meat as I'm super allergic to the common antibiotic they put in animal feed (and sometimes, sneakily in the animal's water), and the problem is that the antibiotic stays in the meat despite butchering and cooking it, making me super sick. It's spendy to be organic but absolutely necessary for my health. Not sure if anyone else knew that or not, but thought I would share :) Enjoy your organic turkey, we will enjoy ours :D Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted - Nov 24 2014 : 4:34:20 PM Nicole, Audrey's face was priceless and she said it all! I have heard of TofuTurkey but never tried any. I bet is someone knows how to make tofu really interesting would make it pretty yummy. As for me??? I am excited about all the side dishes. Honestly, I don't care for the meat as much as I do the various veggie dishes and the homemade apple and pumpkin pie:D For me, The best thing about turkey is the turkey soup. But perfect apple and pumpkin pie..... now that would be enough to make me happy!!

Posted - Nov 24 2014 : 06:41:04 AM Well, we had "roadkill turkey" once. It was a store bought turkey but when I opened the package, it had not been...uh.. "mechanically butchered" correctly. The neck skin was attached, as were feathers and quills. We laugh about it now, but at the time it caused me severe panic on Thanksgiving morning. The picture of my daughter's face is priceless. Scroll down on this blog post and you'll see it if you want a good laugh.

My daughter says she will try to learn to make a turkey this year again. At least we know this one is butchered correctly!

Posted - Nov 22 2014 : 08:16:49 AM Shannon, this morning on PBS, America's Test Kitchen showed Julia Child's protocol for roasting a turkey so the white meat doesn't get so dried out. You are definitely onto something cooking it the way you do. I'm going to try something different this year in how I bake ours. Even though I love tradition, I also love trying new things. Just ask my kids about the year I made "tofu turkey." They've never let me live it down.

Posted - Nov 22 2014 : 07:37:11 AM We too have been eating organic turkeys for the last few years. Oh yum! We get ours from a local farm and it is scrumptious! I have started flipping my bird upside down to roast it, so the fats from the thighs go into the breast meat. Of course, the cooking time is also much less. We actually usually get pretty large birds still - GREAT for leftovers, casseroles, turkey soup, and broth :) Oh how I am looking forward to it!!! Hubby actually went and picked it up this morning. It is definitely beginning to feel a lot like the holidays <3

Posted - Nov 22 2014 : 07:14:37 AM Love the turkey story, MaryJane!
I can't wait to bake mine. All of our side dishes are "classic" but made with all organic ingredients, too, and they taste so much better.
This year, I will teach Audrey how to bake a turkey, too. :)

Posted - Nov 22 2014 : 06:00:40 AM Is it surprising the difference in flavor, baking time, yield, browning/flavor of skin, etc. isn't it?
One year I met a farmer in a parking lot in order to make sure I was getting an organic turkey.
When I was in high school, I won a HUGE live turkey at the prom. When I arrived home it was on my porch in a large cage but it was before cell phones so my parents were surprised when a bunch of guys showed up on their doorstep late at night delivering a live turkey.
Butchering it turned into a family affair but we'd raised meat chickens and hunted pheasants all along so that wasn't a problem. The problem was it didn't fit in my mother's oven so we had to cut it in half and cook it on its side.
It seems there's always someone in most locales that raises a few homegrown turkeys you can get in on. It's worth the effort!!!!!

Posted - Nov 21 2014 : 8:24:04 PM I'm right there with you, Nicole! We had our first organic turkey a couple of years ago, and will never go back! They may look smaller, but they are solid meat. They may be more expensive, but, again, you're paying for meat rather than fat, trim and skin. And the taste... Oh my... They are plucked perfection! I honestly think even though we pay considerably more for an organic turkey, it's a much greater value - not only are they naturally healthier and tastier, pound for pound, when compared to store bought, we get so much more turkey bang for our buck! Trust me, a 20 lb. store bought bird does not yield nearly the meat that a 20 lb. organic bird. It's amazing. I can't wait to hear what you think after "gobbling" it up! LOL! ('Sorry... couldn't resist...)
Enjoy, my friend! And have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted - Nov 21 2014 : 6:41:55 PM I agree completely. I have been ordering from Whole Foods a organic, free range turkey for the past several years. They are delicious and don't make me feel tired or bloated after eating them. I ordered a 10 pound turkey since it is just the 5 of us. I'm really looking forward to it and of course all those wonderful & organic sides! Enjoy your turkey and Happy Thanksgiving!
