Posted - Aug 29 2015 : 12:30:16 PM Happy Saturday Farmgirls! Yesterday I found a "pumpkin" that grows locally at the grocer. It is actually called a Calabaza Squash or West Indian Pumpkin. There are several shapes of the squash that resemble gourds and other winter squashes. When I saw this particular pumpkin shape, I had to have it for my Fall decorations.

I looked up Calabaza Squash on the internet and basically you can cook with it the same as Butternut Squash as they have a similar taste and texture. Have any of you seen this variety in your area? The internet said it grows in tropical regions. Regular orange pumpkins ,that we normally associate with fall , do not grow well this far south with our heat and humidity of the summer season. If you have cooked with the Calabaza, what recipes did you find to be the best with it? I love to make pumpkin soup with regular pumpkins and I am wondering if this squash would make the same tasty result?

Posted - Aug 31 2015 : 06:17:18 AM Winnie, I have heard of Calabaza Squash but have never eaten it. If it grows in FA it probably grows here in TX too. I will have to look for it. I like things I can decorate with while I am waiting to eat it.
