Posted - Sep 27 2015 : 3:14:09 PM oh my gosh was that a surprise that I won. thank you so much everyone. Thank you Winnie and Mary Jane. Wow I can't believe it!!! I picked cortlands, fireside and more honeycrisp apples today. Will do a final pressing next weekend sometime. I do hope to freeze up a few bags of the cortlands to make sauce or bars through out the winter. Then I had to spend time picking up windfalls. Got to keep the ground clean underneath the trees. Again thank you very much.

Posted - Sep 24 2015 : 06:00:26 AM Hi Winnie, please enter my name also. I went apple picking with my boys (8 and 6) a week ago. We picked Honeygold and Cortland apples. I learned that Honeygold makes great applesauce, and Cortland are great for apple butter. I'm a huge fan of lemony applesauce, so I loved finding a recipe that uses lemon zest as well as juice. Normally just me and my husband like apple butter, but this year both of our boys love it also. Here's a fact... Johnny Appleseed is buried in Fort Wayne Indiana in Johnny Appleseed park. Last weekend they had the Johnny Appleseed festival in Fort Wayne.

Posted - Sep 24 2015 : 03:50:45 AM hi, I learned that you should not put apple pomace on your garden. It is too much acid. you can do a compost pile of pomace, lime, dirt, repeating as you go. we have been using our apple press a lot, so had a lot of pomace, which is crushed apples. please enter me in the drawing . I will have to try honeycrisp in sauce. I have a tree full of them.

Posted - Sep 21 2015 : 8:16:59 PM Winnie, I learned that "Johnny Appleseed" was actually John Chapman who was an American nursery man who introduced apple trees to some Eastern states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and even into Ontario, Canada. He was born Sept. 26, 1774 . . . it's almost his birthday!
(Makes me think of my dad and his passion for apples and planting apple trees!)
Thanks again! CJ

Posted - Sep 20 2015 : 7:17:34 PM My latest apple fact this week was discovering the Honeycrisp apple. You can make pies with it, apple butter, sauce and it's good to eat. I went shopping for some at our farmers market and was surprised how big they are. They remind me of a King apple. I grew those as an experiment a few years ago. So guess what I'm doing tomorrow? Making some apple butter. Found a recipe using honey. It makes a small batch. Believe it or not, I'm the only one in my family that loves apple butter. Finally, one thing I don't have to share! So I hope I win this week! I also heard that combining this apple with some Galas, you'll have a mighty fine pie! Now for a bakeover: I'm combining andouille sausage, chopped up sweet potatoes, onions, apple slices to make my bakeover for next Sunday. I think the sweetness of the sweet potato and apples should offset the spicy andouille. I sure could use more of MJ's baking mix! Hint, hint.....

Posted - Sep 20 2015 : 2:33:29 PM I discovered that they are starting to use more dwarf variety apple trees because the tree produces better tasting apples with much more flavor. Also I had no idea an apple tree could live to well over 100years! Plus I'm in Maryland and we produce the sweetest Red and Yellow Delicious apples in the region...whoot whoot! I would love to be entered in the drawing as well. Thank you!
