Posted - Aug 31 2008 : 10:06:20 AM Sara- you could always try spritzing some apple cider vinegar into the garbage ever time you put something in it. I am not sure if that will work, but I think it will!

Posted - Aug 31 2008 : 09:30:23 AM Ok...I'm giving this a shot. We've been recycling EVERYTHING religiously for the last 4-5 months and so only food and real trash is going in the trash can. We don't have a garbage disposal (old house in the city) and we rent, so no compost. We now have to take out the trash when I see fruit flies. But I'm going to try this!
I'm glad I found this out there. I was at my wit's end!
Thanks! Sara |

Posted - Aug 24 2008 : 11:05:19 AM Are fruit flies and sour knats the same thing? I put a little bowl of vinegar on the tray of tomatoes, Some getting ripe, some ripe, some done. The knats/flies, don't seem to be bothered by the vinegar. Tried putting the tray of tomatoes on the back porch, coons (maybe opossums) came up and took a bite out of everyone. So it was back to the tray in the house. If they would just get ripe, wouldn't be such a hassel. |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 4:49:18 PM I tried this ACV remedy and although I never saw even one fly in the vinegar they mysteriously disappeared! Don't know where they went but I haven't had a problem since! And yes, I got the idea of the Farmgirl Connection. What a handy housekeeping tool this website had turned out to be!

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 1:46:44 PM I did something similar and it worked great. Little dish half full of balsamic vinegar, stretch a bit of plastic wrap over top and poke holes with a fork. The holes should be just big enough for the flies to get in but not back out.
