Posted - Oct 06 2008 : 06:13:24 AM Gals, I purchased a wool blanket at an antiques store. How can I clean it? I've put it through the "fluff/air" cycle on my dryer, but it still feels dirty and smells musty. Any ideas?

Posted - Oct 11 2008 : 06:00:39 AM The gentle cycle worked! I hung it on the line to dry and now it is the softest blanket ever! Thanks for all the tips!

Posted - Oct 10 2008 : 7:37:36 PM I thought it was the agitation that stretched it and put it out of shape? I have a front loader now, so I don't have to worry about that part anymore. I wash in cold water, hang it over the shower rod to dry (don't want clothespin marks or a scalloped edge) and then fluff without heat.

Posted - Oct 10 2008 : 06:28:52 AM Yes, the main thing is as little agitation as possiable or you will have a big felt blankie, lol I'm glad you didn't dry clean it, the chemicals are bad. I have my FIL's from the years he was in the navy. It's still quite good.

Posted - Oct 09 2008 : 2:06:09 PM We wash and rinse ours in cold water and put them in the dryer with just the air dry -- no heat. Takes a while but fluffs them up nicely.

Posted - Oct 06 2008 : 07:36:57 AM suzanne s suggestion sounds good to me. i think the problem with wool is if there is a difference in the washing and rinse temps. that is when you can get into "felting" the wool. so if you wash, be sure the temp for wash and rinse is set at the same temp, and use the cycles with the least agitation.
