I am excited to post my annual Apple Giveaway to help celebrate our Annual Apple Festival here at MJF and I hope many of you will sign up. Please leave an apple memory, something about your own apple trees, apple cooking in the fall season, apple picking at local orchards, or any other story you have about the subject that you would like to share. Signup begins today, August 20th and a winner will be chosen August 30th.

One of my first memories of apples arriving at our home in late Summer or early Fall was a trip up to Carter Mountain Apple Orchard. This orchard happens to be on the same road that passes Colonial Michie Tavern and Monticello. At the time of Thomas Jefferson's life at Monticello, all the land was known as Monticello mountain. There was also a horseback riding school on Monticello mountain that I took riding lessons from. One Saturday morning in early September, another friend and I rode our horses up this twisted road to the Carter orchard. There we could ride through the rows of apple trees and even pluck one off the lower limbs to eat and share with our horses. It was a cool day, I remember, and rows and rows of beautiful red apples was a memorable event. Fast forward to 2015 when I went back up to Monticello mountain to see the Jefferson estate. There was still a huge open barn at Carter's mountain where you could ride up and go and buy the various apples and apple goodies. However, come 2024, the orchard is so popular that you can only wait inline, select your purchases from a list and drive to the pick up station and pay. No more getting out of your car to enjoy the beautiful view from the mountain top or wander around the open barn for apples to take home. Time changes many things, but I still have that memory of riding through the apple orchard on a cool Saturday morning with my friend.

Winnie, what lovely memories!
I don't remember going to pick apples to often as a child but we did get to go to the local farmers and get apples by the bushel. I do remember peeling them with the apple parer mom had. She saved every part of the apple. We used to eat the peels which she allowed but she used the cores and peels to make apple jelly. There were apple pies, apple butter, everything she could think she made with those apples. After I married we started getting them from the farmers near us and now we are near orchards so we can pick every year. I love trying new apple dishes. It's always fun to going picking with grandchildren now.

When we moved to our home here in Oregon in 2021 and we found out we had an Apple tree we were/are so happy. We have
Picked our apples ever since. I make pies, crumbles what ever recipe i can find in my cookbooks. This year we found another apple tree , smaller as The previous owner told us it was another cherry tree that he chopped down. Well he did not do a good job chopping thank goodness as hubby found out a couple of days ago there are apples on the branches that have been growing back. Well are so happy! More apples for us and our neighbors:-)

Our little apple tree got so heavy in its second season in the ground that the top broke off. It has stayed really tiny, but continues to produce apples. We do not have the heart to remove it, so we are looking to get an espaliered apple tree. We plan to put it in another area of our yard and figure that then we can keep our tiny one, too. Live and learn!

I enjoy hearing all these wonderful apple stories from literally different parts of the US. Apples are a common fruit with a long and historical story to share. I am not sure about the validity of this but, I heard that when the French came over to hunt and settle up in the Canadian region, they brought apples with them and when they spit them out, some grew into apple trees. And then those trees helped produce more trees when apples fell and rotted underneath. For those who are new, MaryJane has her own orchard of apples that she found when she first bought the property. One of her trees was estimated to possibly be 100 years old. One year, we named it as our MJF Apple Festival Mascot and MaryJane wrapped a red ribbon around it! Do any of you remember that post? Gosh it has been years ago!

Thank you so much, Winnie! I can't wait for m y package to arrive! Our little guy is anxiously awaiting his new espaliered friend! He is so tiny compared to his apricot, peach, and plum neighbors that I think that he feels left out. Thank you getting for drawing my name!

Thank you, Connie Sue! I love apples! I have had apple themed things in my home for years. I even have ceramic measuring cups hanging in my kitchen! In one of the places where we lived I had apple patterned curtains in my kitchen. The house had red Formica counters when we moved in and we couldn't afford to replace them. So I made it work with the curtains. It was a cute kitchen.

Thank you, Ladies! I am so excited! I wish that I could participate in the Apple Swap this month, too, but we are so busy this month and next that I didn't want to add anything else or forget to send out the package! Maybe next year! I have so many ideas for the swap.

Thank you so very much, Winnie! I love, love, love my Apple Prizes! They came in the mail yesterday, but we had already left for my Grandson's going away party! He leaves for New Jersey today to join his new hockey team, the New Jersey Gamblers! Thank you again. You are so generous! I am so happy to be the winner!
