| I just signed on to the Farmgirl Connection, and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Julie, and although I was raised a city girl, I have always had a country heart. My husband and I finally were able to realize our dream around 3 years ago, and bought 60 acres in northwest Louisiana. Think Green Acres. Actually, I think Oliver and Lisa's place was a level or two above us in luxury. Our house was originally two sharecropper homes from the twenties, moved to the propery in the 60's, put together and made into a house (we're one of the few homes in Louisiana to have a cellar). The chicken coop is a leaning tower of tin, held together by rust, baling wire and in one place, the good ol' stand by, duct tape. And I love every last second of it. We named it Paradise Plantation, as my husband figured he just couldn't get much closer to Heaven without actually hearing harps. I'm learning every day, a little more. I'm learning to weave (on a floor loom), made my first batch of lye soap about 2 months ago, will be dipping candles for the first time this weekend, and have been gardening and canning for fifteen years or better. A friend across the way has goats and her beau has dairy cows, and they've volunteered to show me how to milk. I joined this website hoping for some input when I need it, along with a little encouragement and a hefty push when things get really frustrating in the city girl/country woman transition. From what I read, I think I'm in the right place! Oh. And I've read about your bartering. When I get good enough at some of these things, I want to join in. So be thinking about what you might want that I can make. I'm up for just about any kind of challenge, as long as it has to do with eventually becoming a full-fledged farm girl! |

Welcome, Julie. Your place sounds like a lot of fun!!! You're definetly in the right place. I can't wait to hear more about your new adventures in country life. Sounds like you've got great neighbors to help out as well which is wonderful to know. I'm just learning to weave myself - only on a rigid heddle unit. A friend of mine who does everything taught me the basics and now I'm on my own. She also want to teach me to spin. So much to do, so little time. But think your country girl has taken over the city girl. Welcome aboard.
Peace and love. Annie |

Hey there Julie!
You have certainly come to the right place girl There is so much going on around here you'll never be lacking for much again..LOL
Your "slice of pie" in Louisiana sounds so fun...I'm also a citygirl/farmgirl...Been living in and out of rural for about 16 years now.
I've had dairy goats, milked twice a day and made cheese in the past so if you have any questions in that area I'll be happy to help you...Do you sew?? We have a "Stitching and Crafting" section on the forum and the Apron Sew Along is where you can show us what you are working on..
Don't know if you are from Louisiana or was transplanted there...I have freinds in Slidell and lived in and out of there for about 8 years..Right at Lake Pontchartrain...
Glad to have you and don't hesitate to ask for help with anything at all

Hi, Annie! When I originally started thinking about learning to weave, my choice was a Rigid Heddle Loom. Then I had an opportunity to get my floor loom at an unbelievable price and I jumped at it. Mine's a 45" width, and when I say I'm just learning, I really mean it. So far, I think I've made every mistake a new weaver can make, but I am determined to learn to do this! I actually love it, and find it fascinating. I'm just glad there's another weaver out there I can talk to. Looking forward to chatting with all of you!

Hi, Stephanie! We actually live about an hour southeast of Shreveport, which is in the uppermost Northwest corner. I was raised in Shreveport, and this is my first home outside of its city limits. I've been in and around Slidell, but not for any length of time. My dad was a geologist, and spent quite a bit of time down there, and on McIlhenny's Avery Island (home of Tabasco Sauce). To be honest, north LA and South LA are like two different countries. But all of it is beautiful. And yes, I will be taking you up on your offer for pointers on goat cheese. As far as my sewing goes, as long as it doesn't involve anything with sleeves, I'm okay. I'm a scrounger, and have been required to do many sewing projects to recover chairs, make slip covers, dust ruffles, pillows -- just about anything catering to the home. My clothes making skills??? Even a scarecrow would be embarrassed to wear my attempts!

Howdy, Julie! Welcome, welcome! Sounds like heaven to me, and it sounds like you're starting to get a handle on things. You'll find many kindred spirits here, some have farms, some have cottage gardens, all have huge hearts and spirit.
My daddy was born in Tioga, Louisiana--don't have ANY idea where that is, because I can't find anything about it online--must be TINY!

OH MY!!! Another Louisiana Farmgirl and from my hometown!! How exciting! Welcome, Julie! I love the name of your "new" home - Paradise Plantation just makes you smile and beautiful visions immediately come to mind! Choosing that name means you have seen the raw beautiful and all it's possiblities.
An hour away is not too far so I hope we'll be able to visit.
Sounds like you have your hands full, but you've come to the right spot for info. and support. You'll have Green Acres transformed in no time.
Blessings, Kim

Hi, Kim! Come visit anytime! We are actually 45 minutes from the Jimmy Davis Bridge. I'm in Shreveport two days a week, so if you're interested in lunch, let me know! It feels so much better to have someone so close to home on one of these sites. On some, most of the people are a long way away. Look forward to hearing from you!

I hang my head in shame as the louisiana farmgirls check in and I read all the things they do----I'm in Lake Charles and I am a farmgirl at heart. Most of the things you all listed I would love to do, but just haven't done YET. I do needlepoint---
As a child I lived in Kinder, La. on a rice far, My Dad was a cowboy with horses, cows anb rice. My parents are deceased and our farm is no long a farming business. I do have my fourth of it and often think that one day I might "build" me a cabin.
Welcome to all of you; hello to Kim...I have not been as active, but love the posts.
