I've been reading the posts for some time now and everyone here seems so nice! I finally decided it was time to join. I'm Jenny, and I live in southeastern Pennsylvania. The closest thing I have to a farm is a vegetable garden, and I'm hoping to get chickens some day soon! I have 3 sons, ages 17, 15, and 9, a pet mouse, a pet frog, and a mini Schnauzer. Oh, and also a cat that lives outside who adopted us. I would love to make her a housecat but most of our family is allergic to cats, so she comes and goes as she pleases and sleeps in our garage. We feed her, too, and I guess she's grateful cause she brings us presents - dead mice and voles on our front walk. Well, this is turning into a really long intro....I'm just so glad to finally "meet" everyone!

Welcome, Jenny! I'm glad you decided to join in. How long have you had a pet mouse? When I was a little girl, we had a cat who brought my grandmother a 'present' - she carried it into the house and deposited at grandma's feet.....oops!

Those are the kinds of gifts we can do without, aren't they?!! I think the "best" one so far that she's left us has been just a head, perched on the floor of the porch as if it were looking up at us. Blech.
We've had our pet mouse for about a year and a half - I homeschool my youngest son and we were on a homeschool field trip at Petco, and he was dying to get a little pet. First he wanted a snake (not a chance), then a rat (ditto), and then a hermit crab, which would have been ok but all we could find were really, really big hermit crabs and they were pretty ugly, so next to all of that, a cute little mouse didn't sound too bad. He picked one of the 2 black ones out of a tank full of white ones, and named it Casper. Go figure! :-)

Welcome welcome welcome!!!

Where is Green Lane, PA, when I think Southeastern PA I think Kennett Square, are you near there?

I am just south of Kennett Sq. in MD but there is a little diner that we enjoy in Kennett Sq.

You will love it here!
Hugs,

Mary Beth,

If you want to get rid of the wet in Washington us Easterners would take it in a heartbeat! Very dry here!

Hello everyone! Thanks for all of the nice welcomes!
Autumn - We're about 45 minutes from Lancaster County, where the Amish population is. It's one of my favorite places to visit. It's like stepping back in time when you see the buggies going by, and it's such a beautiful area. It's so neat to see the farmers plowing their fields with the work horses hitched to the plows, and in August they start harvesting the tobacco, and you can see the big leaves hanging upside down to dry in the barns - they have special openings to let the air through. I just love going out there!
Lorna - I think we're probably about an hour from Kennett Square - is it near Philadelphia? We're about 1/2 way between Philly and Allentown.
You all have made my day with all of the nice posts - thank you!

How wonderful to be so close to those communities that live so close to the land!
Tell me more! I have pictures and books about the whole life style. I did a whole collection of quilts that are Amish in origin. I visited Kentucky about 20 yrs ago and got to see the buggies and a couple of farms- from a distance. The serenity is what I crave so I guess.

Mary, my daughter's, father in law is a doctor in Sparta, Missouri and he owns a couple clinic's there. He is one of the only doctors left that barters for his work. He has Amish do a lot of things for him as he also owns 600 acres with Perch ions and has some of the land declared wildlife habitat. He has a bear and a buck that he has already acquired, but the point is with the two houses on the place and things he needs done, only the Amish do the quality work for him he needs done. They are truly humble and worthy people.
Love the buggies too..

Hello & Welcome Jenny!!
I am glad to meet you. You fit right in with all the other wonderful farm girls here. Get ready for the time of your life with all the things these gals do.
My second daughter's name is Jenny also. We just moved here from California 22 months ago. We live on an Amish built farm in the Amish community and our Mennonite friends are just about five miles east of us on south-fork. Horse & buggies are daily sights from our porch, if I ever tire of seeing them it is time for my husband to bury out by the pond.

Oh, you girls are so blessed to be sooo close to a slower pace. Here- the whole population is moving sooo fast! This area is highly industrial. Chemical plants, oil, and related high-dollar business. Not much farming left- very little simple living other than gambling boat victims.
The boats may be "fun" for visitors- but it brings it's own "society" and casualties into a community. Our little patch of woods- although we can't see neighbors- is littered with constant noise. The RR moved in a few years ago with a railyard for storage of tank cars and it is 350 ft from the property line. Thankfully we have trees so it's not visible- but oh the noise!!!
So- now you know why quiet country scenes give me such peace!Enjoy yours and I'll dream that it's quiet here!
