I want to make my step-brother's daughter a "beading kit" for Christmas. Just basics for stringing, nothing elaborate. What would I put in it?

If she's quite young , I'd start her with an asst. of beads and findings and stretch magic cord.
If she's older, an asst. of beading wire; jumprings, clasps, basic tools(needlenose pliers, wire cutter), beads of course, charms, box with compartments to store, and a basic beading book ~all available at Michaels/Joanns/Hobby Lobby.

Hi Kim,
Both Joanns & Michaels craft stores have simple pre-assembled jewlery(beading) kits that are reasonable, & if ya have a 40% coupon, that's even better!
I have several of those campartmentived plastic boxes that I have bits & pieces in. like beading wire/beads/findings & charms. I bought over @ the Harbor Fraight store, [in their dollar bin] 1 each, small needle nose plyer & wire cutter.
Hope your niece enjoys beading. oh, & Check out the internet too for free downloadable patterns.
Even Joanns & Michaels sites have free patterns.
In the stores they usually have the freebie craft leaflets too.
