I am completely over the moon here!! I did it!! I can't believe it, but I did it and I have all of you AMAZING farmgirls to thank!! Golly, your work completely inspired me to take myself into the new year by putting myself "out there!" My new store name isn't very clever but it's what I came up with at the time (eyes rolling!! ) Julia42@etsy.com will get you in!! Check it out and PLEASE let me know what you think. I'm not super thrilled with the way the photos of the dresses for women turned out..I'm hesitant to model them myself, which is what I probably should do...not ready to put myself out there that much I guess!! lol I still have several more items to post but I thought it was a good start! Enjoy!! Much love, Julia Hayes

I know, I'm FREAKING OUT!! I'm also trying not to feel like a real jerk too.. A woman with a boutique originally wanted 8 items and asked if I was open to some kind of discounting. I said I was open and asked what she had in mind. She wanted 20% and free shipping. Yikes!! That just felt like too much.. So I countered with free shipping was all. She asked if I could work with 10% and I said no.. Gee whiz! What a freaking tight wad I am but I feel so strongly that the prices I have listed are the very lowest I'm willing to go when I consider material cost, time and energy. Really, the reality is that I barely break even...probably because I'm so slow but anyway, to make a real profit I would have to charge more like 50 - 80.00 for a dress..HELLO for a 2year old?? give me a break!! Although I did just get a magazine for kids clothes that were those prices..they were amazing dresses...really breathtaking..but anyway..I can't charge that so I keep my prices as low as possible..This woman went ahead and placed her order for 6 items. She was kind in her responses to me but did express her disappointment in my lack of openness.. she added that she just wanted to buy more, which was so generous of her to say... She's absolutely right that I said I was open and then I wasn't. I appreciate her honesty so much and told her so etc.etc... just need some feedback from you...You are so much more experienced in these matters and I just don't want to set some sort of precedent before I really understand the process... Thank you for letting me vent! I don't know, I'm thinking about creating some kind of discount for volume ordering like 10% with orders of 500.00 or more.. hahahaha.. Anyway, it is all done and I feel pretty good but for my first transaction I feel I was surprisingly a little unclear and that bums me out! Your thoughts!! ~Julia!!

Honestly!!! People don't want to pay for their art!! Which is what you are doing! My son is an artist and has the same problem-people don't appreciate the time and effort that goes into things!!! Good luck to you! Hugs!!

congrats Julia on your success already!! I loved your stuff - you might want to read over the descriptions of some of your children's items though - I didn't see a size listed on a few of them and that might twart your sales. Once again, Great Job!!!

Also Julia, in response to your questin about discounting - I totally agree with Debi - some people just don't want to pay for your art. I worried a lot about that when I first started selling, but I've found out that there are just as many people who do appreciate your work, and you will sell to them - you really don't need the cheapskates!

Julia- It is so hard to anticipate these issues when you start out selling in a new way...I have found it is best to pick a price and stick with it, except in the event of bulk orders and then be very honest with yourself about how much you must make per hour and how much your supplies are. People will respect that and when you buy something handmade you want to know that you are supporting the artist- not taking advantage of them. There have been times when I have agreed to give special deals and it has cost me money given paypal and etsy fees, materials and shipping not to mention time....now do I tell them it won't work or just make them happy? I always lean towards making them happy when I can (as a one time deal- these have often become repeat customers and I explain everything to them) but it has cost me quite a bit and I made a promise to myself that in the future I will pay myself as fairly as I would an employee to avoid weird interactions and bad juju. That is not to say that I make a lot of money and I do take into account that I enjoy having quiet sewing time and that I benefit from it in non-financial ways. I only sell things wholesale to Huckleberry's on the south hill now and I like having my things available all the time there (burpies and nursing pads). They order six or more of an item at once and have always been very good to me- other stores have wanted to do consignment and that does not work well for me. I may try to take things to our co-op and a few local shops in the future but I am still undecided. Rebekka

Congratulations Julia! Your work is beautiful. I just love those prairie dresses too!
I wouldn't worry too much about that deal. In fact, I think you WERE open. You gave her free shipping which is really a plus. But obviously your work took time & effort and you deserve to be paid for that.
Wishing you lots of fun & success with your business!
