I was up and heard a loud roaring type noise that I thought was a truck or motorcycle, but didn't feel anything. My dog Lizzie jumped back into bed with my hubby and laid really close to him, she's afraid of thunder and loud noises. But right after that on the local morning news they were saying a lot of people were calling and emailing wondering if it was an earthquake. So I'm not sure if it was a truck or something or that it was the earthquake itself. I've been through 2 others and this morning it didn't feel strong where I am, but the epicenter was farther away this time. They are showing some damage to a building in Louisville on the national news.

| I did!!! It woke up both my husband and me around 5:40 this morning. It was kinda cool, not scary, but unsettling. My husband was talking about how fun it was right after it stopped, and all I could think was "Do we have earthquake insurance?" We live maybe 50 miles from the epicenter. I was surprised when they said it was over a 5, I really thought it was not too bad. I never would have thought that we would have an earthquake here in Indiana! |

My sis is in illinois but I haven't heard from her yet. She works the AM shift at a rehab/nursing facility as a speech therapist. She doesn't get home til about 12:30. She is way up north on the Wisconsin border though.
My hubby and I bought earth quake insurance 2 years ago. We live along the New Madrid fault line and scientists say we are in for a BIG one sonetime in the next few years. The last time there was a major earthquke on this line it was felt in a 50,000 square mile radius. The SanFrancisco earthquake of 1906 which most people think of was only felt in a 6,000 mile radius!
Our policy is only 194.00 a YEAR!!!! Excellent! And it will cover EVERYTHING in the event of an earthquake. Normal Homeowners wont cover most earthquake damage so for the price it is definatly worth investing in if you live anywhere near a fault line.

Yes, Bonnie, we sure did feel it all the way in West Tennessee. Unbelievable! DH was in his truck and said he thought a big wind was blowing it back and forth. Yikes!
Thanks for that info, Julie. I think we need to look into that. We've been following the updates on the New Madrid fault as well. It would have an impact on us, too.

When I was little, we lived in Blytheville, Ark. for a little while and were only a few miles from the fault. My mom was so paranoid about the BIG ONE hitting while we lived there.
I am sure alot of people are going to be looking into earthquake insurance around here now. I don't think that we have it yet, but I am going to get our policy and see. We have a lot of underground coal mines in our area and I can't imagine what those poor guys thought was going on this morning! |

Hope all of you are ok, I know (as do all the other Calif. farm girls) that earthquakes are NOT FUN and certainly not on our "list of things to have/experiance"...

I felt it! My husband was getting ready to go turkey hunting when the entire house started rumbling!!!! We have felt the after shocks while at school too. The kids are very excited to talk about it in Science today!

Most, if not all, earthquake policies have a 5 or 10% deductible. If you're house is valued at $250k, it doesn't start to pay until the amount of damage is over $12,500 or $25,000. CA, NV and AK are the most earthquake prone states. We've had dozens of small ones, 3 or lower, every day just west of Reno. And the big one in Wells NV, almost to the Utah border not long ago. I experienced all of them from the early 70's until I left in '95 in SoCal and it can be scary. Allstate stopped writing earthquake coverage here a year or so back and we changed all our policies to AAA. From today's paper, I see they're writing them again through in independent insurer. I've never experienced a tornado or hurricane, so can't say which is worse, all of them can be so devastating.

Nope, didn't feel a thing here southwest of Chicago. Then again, we're not awake at 4:40 a.m. so we slept right through it. When I was at the grocery store though, one of the produce guys said he felt it in Chicago. To my knowledge there was no damage anywhere.

My brother lives in Bloomington, IL and I called to make sure they were ok. He didn't even know there had been an earthquake!! I told him it's pretty bad when I have to call from WA to let him know what's going on in IL. Glad everyone is ok.

All my dogs jumped up at the same time(5:30AM) and started barking and ran to the back of the house(they can see out the sunroom). I heard sort of a rumbling noise, but at the time, and with all the dogs barking, I didn't know if I was imagining things. The news people said the earthquake was at 5:30AM exactly! So I guess I need to pay more attention to the dogs from now on. I didn't even know where to go in case of an earthquake. Never even thought about the possibility.

Our local paper quoted geologists saying we could have even more earthquakes up to a few weeks!

Didn't feel that one but it sounds scary!
I live near Anchorage and we get small ones all the time, I am not sure if we have earthquake insurance or not! Need to check into it.
When I lived in Seward they were almost every week. If you have never read about the huge alaska earthquake back in 1964 it was a doosy. Seward photos and info.
