I made a blog about making the green bags.
http://greenbagseamstress.blogspot.com/
I've been making the GreenBagLady bags for a few days now. I started out with scraps and yuck old fabric to get the hang of it, and now I have made a set of 9 matching bags, which are really cute. They are not hard to make at all and I'm sure there are other patterns out there that would be comparable. So I looked on ebay to see if people are buying these type of things and unfortunately are kinda of pricey and a bit expensive if they are going to be used for groceries. So if the GreenBagLady can have thousands of requests, and there are obviously people who are willing to buy the bags, wouldnt you think that if non sewing people sent you fabric and a few bucks for thread and time and shipping it back to them that you could make the bags for them? I know there are a lot of people on here who sew, and I was just wondering what yalls thoughts on this were?

I love this idea. Honestly, they should not cost too much.I think it is great what she is doing. It is neat that she really gives these away, esp with tough economic times. Of course it is good to make money off of what you sew too. I like her approach to the community stepping up to help create these to reduce or eliminate plastic bag consumption.

Well, I was thinking of giving away a bunch at the farmers market here, but then I was thinking about all the people who would like to have a bag that cant sew. And then the shipping, and I dont have the fabric. I dont think it would be profitable at 2 dollars a bag. But at least it could cover some of the cost...They are selling bags online for 3.95 a piece made in india and so generic! I love the idea of giving them away also, but I coldnt afford to give away as many as she has. So I was thinking that if someone wanted a bag made, they could send the fabric, and enough $ for return postage and in return they could get a hand made bag. |

I think that's brilliant. I love to make my cloth bags, and it does feel so good to know it's that infintessimal difference we can all make in reducing plastic bag use...thanks for the info...

This would be a great community service project. I'm sharing it with my girls & mom that all sew.

i was thinking about making a little sign to hang n my cart at the grocery store. "Handmade Reusable Shoppings Bags For Sale" $2 ea. Hey, it's free advertisement!!I cut out fabric for aout 10 more last nite and made a bunch of handles too. It's made me so much better on the sewing machine! I have only had two requests for bags so far : - / I dont think anyone is going to join the "coalition". Oh well, I am making bnches and bunches of bags, and I'll certainly figure out something to do with them. |

You could give them out at a farmers market as you shopped and maybe put a label in them with your blog and they might come back and buy some from ya
