I really love the look and feel of the Lion Homespun yarn but I have never been successful using it. I've tried many different size crochet hooks and I've done it both loose and tight. Everything I try making with it ends up looking sloppy so I always get disgusted and go on to another project.
Anyone have any success with this yarn? What have you made?

I have made blankets and scarves out of it. Because of it's nature, you do get a looser look about it, so I try to keep that in mind when I envision the project. It sure is hugably soft, isn't it?!

I've only done scarves. I tried to start a sweater and then found it looked "frumpy" to me. Back to a nice warm long scarf with fringe....

They are a dream to work with
Your work goes really smooth
I really love these crochet hooks
they have a flat handle which is good if you have arithis or carpal tunnel syndrome

I help make prayer shawls for a church here, and we use that yarn. Lion brand has a website with crochet patterns on it (I think it is lionbrand.com), so maybe you could get suggestions there. The only thing I don't like is that it really unravels a lot. The gals in charge of the prayer shawls like fringe but I kind of dislike the untidiness of unravelly yarn. (Not that I am particularly tidy in the rest of my life!) Most of us knit but the one lady who crochets makes lovely shawls and she is FAST too - she does about twice as many as anyone else. She seems to crochet fairly tight, as her shawls seem more dense than the knitted ones.

I'm not a fan of homespun yarn either. It's hard to work with and will tear if your tension is too tight.

I love it - I have made at least 40-50- hats and scarves out of it. I use an aluminum crochet hook and never have any trouble with it. Maybe you are crocheting too tight for the yarn. I also made a prayer shawl out of it - knitted on a bamboo circular needle - kinda loose, big needles, and great results also. I think you just have to ease up on the tension a little.

No - I use Homespun for my adult and teen hats and scarves and prayer shawls. I use 100% cotton yarn for the little girls hats. And I've started making little boys camo hats out of camo worsted weight acrylic. Funny - I never had any issues with Homespun - always thought it was really nice to work with because it's so soft, but I have heard SO many people say the same things you all are saying - it's difficult, it's wavy, and it splits when you insert your hook. Maybe I'm just a really l----------o-------------o----------s----------e crocheter!

Well, I have three skeins of a really pretty blue left so I guess I better find some scarf patterns. Now that I think about it, I like to be able to see the stitches clearly when I'm done rather than just a big piece of fabric, so maybe homespun isn't for me. But I agree, it is soooo soft.

Several women have had similiar problems
I did too until I tried those plastic hooks from clover
Like I mentioned they are a dream to work with

| I never liked Homespun yarn until I tried it on my Knifty Knitter Looms. I can whip up prayer shawls in no time this way and it doesn't seem to get squirrly like it does when I try knitting or crocheting with it. Susan |

If you use another strand of yarn, like a sport weight, along with the Homespun, it's alot easier to crochet with and looks really nice! I use Homespun alot for making blankets for my dogs and I always crochet with double strands of yarn.

I love the stuff. I do a single crochet for the whole skein. I do the same as dishcloths. i Its easy and quick, I use a large hook and loose stiches then hang it up on a hanger. I let them strech before wearing them. I don't like anything too complicated with it. I think if the yarn is busy do a simpler stitch. Save the simpler yarns for the difficult pieces.
