Hi Gena!
Welcome to the forum!
Composting is a great and _easy_ way to rid yourself of unwanted household waste like newspapers, cardboard and kitchen leavings. You can also add in things like herbivore manure (cow, horse, sheep, goat, chicken etc) grass clippings, etc.
Your compost heap shouldn't smell bad unless you have over done it on one ingredient or another. Here are some great links on how to make and tend to a compost heap.
Hey Gena-congrats on the composting idea-I think you'll be very impressed with the results-tho they do take awhile. If you read the articles carefully and follow instructions, nothing smells at all. My problem was keeping my kids and hubby outta mine-while they were all gung-ho for the idea, they just assumed anything could go in there! I had a huge mess and had to start over. For my kitchen, I use a very large, pretty enamel bowl I found at a garage sale and keep a dish towel over it. I take it out and empty it in the bin every other morning. Good luck! ~kate
