| and started my very first spinning, and doing it on my homemade spindle! its not turning out great but with only pictures and the written word i figure i am doing pretty fair *grin* it is really thicker than i would like but i am gonna stay with what i am doing till i have this 2 ounces all spun and can either weave with it or crochet something small and bulky! i definately dont have to worry about plying it! lol. peace connie in alaska |

Practice makes perfect! Predraft your roving down thinner before you start spinning. That may help you. I have found that doing a better job on my carding helps make my yarn nicer. I have pretty much taught myself ( and it looks like it too!) but my yarn is getting nicer. I also have been loaned a drum carder. That does a better job of carding then I was doing by hand. My first yarns I called, My Unique Novelty Yarn. Expensive stuff in a store! :)

That wishes were horses saying is one I quote to my children (it's in their tattered Mother Goose rhyme book) and they always roll their eyes when I quote it. You brought that back to me with your reference.
Awesome on the homemade spindle! I'm impressed. My first yarns done on a wheel were quite variegated in thickness and bulkier than anything I spin now. It's just beginners yarn and it's a treasure as you'll look back on it and see how far you've come and appreciate it. Not sure what kind of wool you're using - if it would felt you could crochet up a hot pad (plain old square) or do a little drawstring bag and felt it and enjoy your first yarn for a long time. I haven't used my first spun yarn, just skeined it and it's in with my stash. It too was too thick to ply but now that I made this suggestion to you, I think I will make something out of it. Have fun!

Connie, I am so excited for you!! It is so fun and relaxing to spin yarn. I am almost finished with my first ounce of wool and I am honestly not sure I am doing it right. If you go over to "spinning cotton today" in this forum, on the third page Grace has a book that she carries at her shop called "Spin It" which she said is really good! Someday we will all look back at our first yarn and go "Oh my gosh" and see how far we have come!
Marly, If you have never tried then I would encourage you to give it a shot! Drop spindles are not that expensive and it really is fun to do!!

marly it cost me less than $4 to make my spindle. i use a half hitch instead of a hook on mine (tho i did buy the hook for it) that was suggested to me by a friend who spins, that way you can use it as top or bottom whorl.
monica, i hope your yarn is thinner than mine! i am undecided if i want to keep it for posterity or use it for somethign like a potholder as jami suggested.
jami i am gonna let my 16 yr old son know that i am not the only one who uses those "lame" sayings! he thinks i am older than dirt! i do use alot of the, i guess cuz i heard them so often as i was growing up! lol.
michele i cheated and bought the ready to use stuff *grin* tho i did see a pair of angora goats that were free! sadly they are about 2 tanks of gas from us *sigh* with these darned high gas prices it would probably be less costly to buy one!
is it better to pull of lengths of roving and "fan" them or to pull long , thin sections off the side?

I pull off long thinner sections from the side. But hey who knows if it is right or not. You kind of just do what works for you.

michelle that was what i learned today! i had been pullign off sections and fanning them out. the lady at the weavers yarn (our local spinning and weavning store!) told me i might have better luck pulling off pencil sized peices from the edge. gonna try that tomorrow!
