I am on the planning committee. We used to have this festival every year, but the woman who did it all got burned out a few years ago and stopped. Now a bunch of us are getting together to get it going again. Besides the vendors and food, what other things have you all seen at one of these that you really enjoyed or that you thought was really different?
In the past, we have had music performers, belly dancers, Native American dancers and face painting. One year we had a dunk tank which was a huge hit which I mentioned but the others thought that was not really arts related and didn't want to do that. So, I'm looking for "arts related" kind of activities and entertainment. One person mentioned a kids activity area. But I'm not sure what we could have set up for kids to do except finger painting and making things with pipe cleaners and stuff. So, ideas in this area are really needed, too.
So, what do you all think?

When we have a fall/harvest festival at church in the past some of the things that the kids have done were:
string pony beads to create their own necklaces, bracelets, etc...
Have someone take photos of the kids in front of a bale of hay or something and then have a booth next to this where they make their own picture frames from wooden tongue depressors and attach magnets to the back.
We had some one bring a melting pot and harvest candle scents and small jars and wax cubes. The kids got to put their name on the bottom of the jar and then place a wick in the jars, add their wax cubes of choice and the candle person then poured melted wax to fill in. The kids took it home after it had set up a little while. They loved this!
They also got to stuff a scarecrow to take home. These are mostly fall type of ideas, but it gives you a starting point. Maybe check out a kids craft magazine for more ideas?

Those are some great ideas, Brenda. The necklace idea is cheap and easy and so is making the picture frames. We actually have a candle maker in town who has had classes on field trips go into her store to make their own candles. Maybe we could get her to set up in the park! I love these ideas! Thank you.

What about getting a roll of Newsprint and some Tempura paints. You could create a "Wall of Art" where anyone- especially kids could get a 3 foot section of paper to create with! You could even thin out the pain and put it in those cheap squeeze bottles for Ketchup and Mustard (the flexible kind not the stiff kind) Let people make their own abstract art.
I also love the idea of having dancers or musicians of all different types. Does anyone do tap or Irish dance? Do you have some local fiddlers? Can you get the Native American Dancers? You could do "Heritage Dances".
You could also ask some of the local artists to do demonstrations. Lisa- You could show people how to do your baskets!

our town 'art in the alley' has kids activities each year .. i am in charge of it .. and we have all come up with some GREAT and fun ideas! i think my most favorite we have ever done is to make large, intricate twisted WIRE and twig BUBBLE WANDS! i can post a pic if you'd like to see one .. soooooo EASY .. and of course, you have a big bucket of 'bubble soap' for them to enjoy the fruits of their creations! xo

| What about printing with veggies/fruit on totes, t-shirts, or just paper/greeting cards? How about making rain sticks with papertowel rolls and rice/lentils? Soda bottle bird feeders? Jewelry from all kinds of repurposed/found/recycled stuff like bottle caps, buttons, yarn/string, oh, and don't forget to add some glitter!? Origami? What about making beads out of old magazines and then stringing them? |

Alee, I didn't even consider art/craft demos. That would be fun. I think we do have a couple of fiddlers around here. We might be able to get the Native American dancers back again (I hope). They were really fun to watch.
Debra, kids just love face painting! We had one up here for a couple of years. I hope we can get her back. I'm adding that to my growing list!
Frannie, yes, please post a picture, so I can see how to do it. Kids and bubbles? Mega hit!
StarMeadow, those are all great ideas, too. How do you make beads out of magazines? And the soda bottle bird feeders? I've seen rain sticks and those are really easy to do.
This is exciting! You gals have given me so many fun ideas. I'll have everything printed out with supply lists and contacts for our next meeting. I so love you guys!

StarMeadow, you are just a wealth of info! I will run all of these ideas by the committee. I don't know if we can do ALL of them in the kid's art area, but we can sure get as many as possible this year and just add on each year after.
If anybody else has any more ideas for the adults, too?

At the fall festival I usually go to, they have rag dolls for kids to make. Kind of like corn husk dolls, only with strips of fabric and yarn. My girls loved making them!

I also forgot to mention there are several women who spin and dye their yarn on site as a demonsration. And quilting bees with various types of quilts being displayed. Look into varieous reinactment groups. Thay do demos of all kinds of interesting stuff.

At the charity knit a longs I've been too, you just bring something to work on like a baby's hat, or a pair of mittens, or a scarf (or whatever) and then you just stop by and knit! Sometimes the organizers want something specific like a block. Then the knitting group will put the blocks together or collect the "stuff" for the appropriate charity. Most of the time there are needles there and donated yarn too. So, if you're a knitter, you can just sit down for a minute and knit a square and move on if you like.

These are all such great new (to us, anyway) ideas! I'm printing this thread and Frannie's thread for the bubble wands and taking them to the next meeting Sept 9. I'm sure the other planners will get excited over all of this, too. Thanks so much for helping out.

Hi Lisa,
We have a Fall Festival and a Harvest Festival here in North Creek. The Harvest Festival is at Gore Mtn (ski area) and is large. We have bands throughout the day, the gondola runs all day, there is a clown with face painting and balloon animal making, food, crafts, Our local Alpaca farmers come with the some of their Alpacas and crafts, there are bouncy houses.
At the Fall Festival -much smaller on a friends open farm. They have hay rides,pumpkin carving, stamp t shirt making, donut eating contests (you take a donut thru string tie it on a branch of a tree and they eat it, 1st one done wins, there is a hay area where the kids can search for pennies,bonfire and lots of Food!

Hey, I like the penny hunt! And the donut on a string, too. We used to have these kids whose family has llamas that would give rides during the festival. But their youngest just went off to college so, I don't think the parents would be interested in doing it. The kids only did it to have some spending money.
I just love all the neat new ideas, girls! I'll let you know what is decided after the meeting.
