Today I was listening to the radio in the car while I was running errands. I thought it was funny that a local Italian food place was claiming to be "Not your normal Garden Variety".
It got me to thinking. Garden Variety is supposed to denote something a bit plain or normal. But when I compare my "Garden variety" fruits and veggies from the "Store variety" I think my Garden varieties are much better!
Now, I know garden variety was originally meant to denote between the "normal" and the "hybrids". But in today's society where the average person does not grow their own food- I think it is funny that I think of garden variety as opposite to the intended meaning!
Isn't that funny? I was snickering to myself in the car when the add was playing. I guess they don't take the farmgirl mentality into consideration when they write their ads.
Alee, that reminds me of a story that my Mom used to tell. They always had a garden and came from gardening families. Some city friends were at their house for supper one night and Mom served greenbeans from the garden. The friend was surprised as to how good they were and remarked that they were almost as good as store bought. Made my Mamma mad!
