Greetings from the middle of NC

I'm a native Ohioan by birth, and a Southern Gal of 6 years now by marriage.

We farm 10 acres, live on 13 and can roam on almost 100.

Favorite past times are of course farming, canning, cycling and poultry! We have 2 cats one dog and 26 lovable chickens. I;m also an animal keeper at the zoo and preside over the antelope and gazelles and 4 stupid ostrich

I'm thrilled to have tripped onto this site and will absoutly return to swap stories, ask for suggestions and try to assist others.

Happy day to y'all

Hi Anna!
Welcome! I'm an Ohio farmgirl by birth too, but have been calling north Idaho home now for the last thirty years, and MaryJanesFarm has been my home for four. Always like to meet a fellow Ohioan, though!

Your zoo job sounds wonderful -- what an experience getting to know those exotic animals up close and personal! On a trip north to visit a friend's cabin this weekend, we ran across of herd of yaks, of all things! Turns out some new people decided to import them for some reason. Glad I had a local in the car to tell me what they were -- I would have assumed some exotic cow -- a bigger (much) and hairier (MUCH) version. They really looked like a cross between a buffalo and a longhorn steer, with a llama coat thrown in the mix! I took photos, so if they turn out, I'll post one here on the web.

Hope you enjoy our forum!
Carol

Ostrich eyes are 1/3 the size of their brains. This doesn't leave much area for brain capacity. But like most creatures, they have at leat one or two endearing qualities. Our male a few years ago was hurt to the point of almost loosing his head , literally, and from that point on, he has been a dream to work with. Otherwise look out! Most ostriches will kick like velociraptors!

Being an animal keeprs is fun, and it's the being outside aspect and not locked inside all day that really makes the job worth it.

If we wern't so involved with chickens, I'd have gone the alpaca route! What makes them so expensive anyway!?

One other tidbit, anyone interested in livestock, look up Belted Galloway. They are the oreo cows. Cute! (and tasty) They are starting to get popular around here.

Hi Anna,
I'm a newbie too-so cool that you work at a zoo and in NC. I'm grew up in Ohio and have lived in MI for the past 15 years. Have a BIL and SIL there in NC near Wilmington that we visit each year-it is so beautiful and warm there.

welcome Anna! One of the other Julia's here! Glad to have you on board! YOu sound like you are a busy girl with all those animals at work and home. So are Ostriches dumber than sheep?

Yes, At least sheep know to follow the herder or go with the herding dog. An ostrich could be "herded" but then might forget what it was doing and just stop dead to pick at the grass or look at someone mowing the lawn or some other distraction. We have one that won't cross over thresholds. Going into a barn stall is one thing, but crossing from the exhibit to into a paddock was entirely something else. The hole to go through was at least 15 feet wide! It took 3 keepers and a truk to get this animal shifted! All the others just folow the male.

We had our boss man chase an ostrich a few months back. We know not to allow roosters to run us, so when it does we are supposed to run it, pick it up and generally "show it whose boss" but when an ostrich gets a wild hair, it's best to back out. They run and spin in circles and can get aggressive w/o any provocation. It's funny to watch, but not when you are on the receiving end. Luckily with the boss, he turned on the ostrich so fast, it starlted her and all she could do was run!

I lived in Cincinnati. It's a fun city Worked in the animal part of King's Island for 5 years starting out, then moved on in 1994 when the animals were shipped out.

I'm a Skyline addict,,, and it' funny how my NC hubby loves the stuff! We have it imported by way of friends and family.

Went to Kent State 1988-1994 (6 year plan...not my choice).

Still have many friends I keep in contact with.

So sad how the cows and corn firlds near the highschool are now completely gone and replaced with massive subdivisions and a Wal-Mart
I hardly recognize the place
