Cheryl ~ What kind of things are you putting in your garden journal? I tried last year to do a journal/scrapbook thing, but just gave up. Blogging was just easier, plus now I can find things by category.

Lanna, Oh yeah. I'm saying your name right. I was gonna post the banana thing, but didn't know your sense of humor yet. Corrine already knows that I go into Pepe LePew mode when I talk with her!! Haha! Oh yeah, and your kids would love me for a baby sitter. I used to Taz my nephews (when they were small enough). I'd wrap them up in a blanket and spin them like tops. Good laughs and bruises for sure! And everytime I have to squeeze in between chairs or people I re-inact the scene where Bugs is in the theater, and he keeps getting up and moving..."excuse me, pardon me, sorry bout that bub, excuse me". My husband is known for calling people 'maroons' too. (Bugs called the Martian that)
Just about all of our snow is gone! YAY! I can see my rhubarb patch and garden. Well, mud hole. I am going to try to save my blog stuff, but think I have a computer bug or something. I still cannot access it. So I may spend today starting over. Fun Fun.
Have a great Sunday girls and please email me if i owe you a journal or otherwise. I'm getting forgetful!

Just to keep up with ya'll. I've read The Secret Life of Bees twice now too and awaiting for it to come to Pay-per-View.
Black Walnuts. NOT an easy task. Time consuming for sure. Gather them with gloves on. Take a hammer and crack open the leathery hull and peel off. This is very messy and STAINS! I had walnut stained hands for about a month. I threw mine in a 5 gallon bucket filled with water. The ones that float, pitch. They are probably bad (full of worms). I reserved some 'stain water' for distressing some crafts projects. Not bad, needs some modifications. Then, I dumped the nuts on the ground thinking I'd power spray them off. Thus the chase..... So I had to corral them in a bucket again and power sprayed them til they were pretty clean. This year I will use those screened boxes. Then I spread them out to dry for about 2-3 weeks in my shed. Once dry, I cracked them all and picked out the nut meat. Very time consuming but soooooo yummy. I froze some too so I have them for baking. Do you want some next fall? You better remind me. I also have a hickory nut tree too. I had LOADS of hickory this year. Old farmers say that if the hickory falls heavy, we'll have a very cold winter. I'd say they were right on this year!

Dawn, I've tried your blog and it loads but immediately shuts off. I would say it is something on the blog server or on the blog itself, like pics ??? which causes this. Have a great sunday, love, Corinne

Corinne - I will e-mail you as soon as I can with the hotel - I know it is in the 4th arrondissement but my dad has the contact info and he is in New Orleans till the 16th but as soon as he gets back I will let you know. Dawn - sounds like the boxes may be the answer to all the cussin' I heard round about black walnut season last year, although it may eliminate the entertainment value for observers:) Lanna - I have a couple recipes for fondue - will e-mail you tomorrow because I left them at work where I am putting together a fondue recipe sheet for customers - hmmm, Dawn, you may be right this fondue thing is getting a little out of hand. I may be obsessed. Anyhow Lanna, kids would probably love fondue and the cheese one is good with bread and apples Cheryl - I love going out to breakfast, it is cheaper than other meals but really yummy. Everyone else - good morning and have a lovely day, it is sunny here so far but chilly - we have to go to town to run errands, then home. Hopefully I will have the energy to do something fun or constructive when we get back - I am still fighting the mid-winter blahs Amy Grace

Isn't it just TORTURE to see the sun shining, the snow melting, the garden calling, and knowing you will sink to your knees in mud if you go out there!!!!!!!

Dawn ~ I tend to have a warped sense of humor.... At least the hubby and I make each other laugh. What's kind of sad is that I can't eat bananas unless they're hidden in a good banana bread. I'll spare the details of why, but yeah. I bet shipping walnuts to me would be a pain in the rear though... Probably easier for me to just hunt around town (I think my strawberry farm people across the border have walnut trees, as well as a random house on a local main drag) and get a few buckets... Basalmic walnuts are super yummy on salads, and hubby likes them in his half of carrot cakes. But I just don't like occasionally paying $4/small bag for 'em at the store. Besides, I bet the kids would have a blast going after them with mallets... What does a hickory nut taste like? I don't think I've ever had one.
Amy Grace ~ Well, next town over there's a place called the Melting Pot. All fondue, all the time. You dip your meats/whatever in hot oil to cook 'em fondue style, cheese and bread/whatever for appetizer, chocolate and such for dessert, that kind of thing. I'm always intrigued, but not enough to find a babysitter, drive over there, and pay $50-$75 for the ordeal. I figure I can do it cheaper and better with the right recipe, and include the kiddos to boot.
Oh geez... Is Siegers also going to patent nipples since they have a similar shape and are also a natural evolution thing? And charge women for every month they nurse? Bah.

Teresa Sue ~ Mud? I'd be happy with mud, and so would the kids! Our crusted over snow has been softening up because of the rain/wet snow we've gotten the last little bit, so now rather than being able to truck around on top of the snow, the kids are sinking in up to their hips. So much for sending 'em outside to work off some energy.

Hey - since I'm the badge badger and all, wanted to let you all know I just started a thread for a reusable shopping bag swap over in Farmgirl Barter. One of the new badges is to collect and commit to using reusable shopping bags and a higher level is to make and trade one. I thought this might be a good one for Mavens but I know everyone is busy so I opened it up for all farmgirls, but if you are interested hop on in Amy Grace

Amy Grace ~ Yup, nearish CdA. I won't commit to a town on a public forum though. We lived in the valley for a bit there before hubby got his great job over here. I haven't gotten around to making my own shopping bags (already have a bunch of cotton washable grocery bags and produce bags), but have been debating making my own sandwich/cookie/treat bags (like reusable ziplocs I suppose). The folks at the farmers market always get a kick out of me - wearing/nursing a kiddo, whipping out my own bags, or during peach/apple season I take the little red wagon to haul stuff from the market back to my car. I'll be waiting for that fondue recipe...
Well, maybe after I get a few things done I might send something off to Siegers. Unless one of you has a form letter I can just tweak.
And guess what I just realized? I have to start seeds in like 3 weeks! How did that sneak up on me?!? I need to call Heirloom Acres tomorrow and see if I can add to my order if it hasn't shipped yet - I want/need a few extra things since I'll have more ground to play with. My latest find was Laxton #9 - a pea plant that stays a tidy 15-20" tall or so which would mean I don't need trellises! Ah, the fun. My spring to-do list is just insane now though. Poor hubby, his honey-do list is getting longer as well. At least he'll be getting vacation time soon here after this insanity lately.
Oh, another random thought. Anybody know where I can get my hands on an aloe plant? My grandma had half a dozen on the garage windowsill for as long as I remember, but since I wasn't into gardening when she died, I didn't snag one of her plants. I'd figure out how to rig up a contraption by the front door so it could get sunlight during the winter (and not end up a toddler toy).

Good morning Mavens,
I got an update on the Sieger Seed Co greed-grab from Idigmygarden, here is the US patent office link. Please make a protest over this to them. This is one facet of what we are all about, don't think, "Oh, I'll let the other guy(Maven) do that". The way this patent is written is very open and can encompass any curbit with warts, if my understanding is correct. http://www.uspto.gov/ I'm counting on all of you to take your garden gloves off and hit hard!LOL!

Ladies~I am trying to catch up with all the posts here. I have been so busy and then don't have time to check in. Homeschooling is keeping us busy. The kids have classes on Wed afternoons and all day on Thursdays.
We got our taxes done! yeah!!
I have my order all ready for SSE. I need to check with hubby if I should call it in or just mail it. I can't wait to get my seeds started. I have a book on hold at the library. It's about starting everything from seed. I saw it in the SSE catalog. I am reading Organic Gardening the No Dig Way. That is a good book. I can't afford to buy them all but am so grateful that our library has them all.
Dawn~I can't wait until you get your hat. I am anxiously awaiting the gardening journal to jot down all the ideas running around in my head. I was wondering if for the Spring Fling could a whole family come or just us farmgirls?
Annika~So sorry to hear about your dad. (((HUGS)))
Karen~How cool that you could visit Baker's Creek. I would love to visit SSE when they have their big festival in July.
I am thinking of all of you. I will keep reading. This is only up to page 277. I 'm catching up, though. Ruth

Dawn~I still haven't gotten my chick catalog~should it have come already? I am having trouble with my mail~I think. I think the boxes you got are for sifting. Maybe you could use them to sift compost or is the mesh large?
I can't wait to start planting. I am hoping to get these seeds started nice and strong inside first. I have to remember not to plant too many seeds and to thin them out so they get nice and strong.
The snow is almost all melted here. It will be in the 30's and 40's here this week. YEAH!!
Emilee~I kept getting an error message when I tried the link.
Teresa Sue~it is torture.
