Are there any other Hoosier gals on here? My name is Lora and I live in Alexandria on 18 acres. We have chickens, horses, ducks, cats and dogs.

I have been married for 15 years and we have 1 son Lliam, who is a high functioning autistic.

I like the simple life (though I have to work full time for insurance). I would very much like to run my own business, but since I can't decide what to do, I inspect trucks all day for the Indiana State Police.

Thanks for having me,
Lora

Hello Lora and a big Georgia welcome. Is Alex. anywhere Noblesville. Son and DIL live there. Lots of in-laws, too.
You inspect 18 wheelers? My husband drives for Heartland and goes up there quite a bit. You've probably seen him if that's what you do. He looks like Santa.
18 acres is alot. Does your son help with the farm work? Sure would be nice to have a few teenage boys around here to do chores!!!

Hi Lora! Another Hoosier, here! I am a transplant, though. I am not sure where Alexandria is, but I live about 30 miles south of Terre Haute. Welcome to the Farm!

Hi Lora and all the other wannabe farmgirls. I'm Nancy in Ft. Wayne, IN. Hubbie and I are awaiting his retirement in a couple of years and are investigating sustainable farming as our future. We are novices where such a life is involved and any tips from others who have completely changed their way of living would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Nancy!

I lived in Fort Wayne for a bit when I was in college. I'm from Wabash, but after moving around a lot - my hubby and I found a nice place just outside Alexandria. We are between exits 45 and 41 just off I-69.

I think you (and your hubby) will learn loads here. I know I have. When I was little, we had a house in town, but always seemed to be at my grandpa's farm south of town. My grandmother taught me tons in the 9 short years I knew her before she passed. From her I learned a tremendous amount about gardening, but the think what I remember the most is she always said "A garden without zinnias really isn't a garden." So I always plant a row or two of those just for her.

Glad to have another Hoosier here!!

Lora

I hope that the forums can help me get over my fear that I won't be up to the challenges that we'll face. My husband is in excellent health but I have Lupus and can't stay out in the sun. I can't even weed our flower bed so I can't imagine taking care of a big garden again. I've done it in the past but not in the past 3 years.

I picked the first batch of apples from our 2 trees yesterday. They are from the last certified John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) tree which is in Ohio. The first 2 years the trees produced only a couple of tiny horrible tasting fruit. Well, much to our surprise, the trees are loaded this year and the apples are wonderful. They're Rambos and taste very much like Granny Smiths. I made a batch of applesauce for dinner last night. I am going to try Mary Jane's recipe for precooked apple pie filling in a week or two. Have you tried any of her recipes? I haven't yet.

Sorry for running on so. Have a wonderful first day of Fall.

Nancy

Hi Nancy, man would I like to have a graft from that tree. If you are into heirloom plants, check out the thread DANGER OF EXTINCTION. We are starting a new chapter because of it called MJ'S HEIRLOOM MAVENS.

Marcy,

Name the time and the place and I'll be there.

Teresa Sue,

We bought 4 of the trees and donated 2 to the city of Ft. Wayne. John Chapman is buried here in what is now called Johnny Appleseed Park. We celebrated our annual Johnny Appleseed Festival this past weekend.

I've never taken a graft from a tree before and don't really know how to get one. I could research it and would be very happy to see if I could do it. I'll let you know about doing it.

Yippy - day off of work tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!! Taking the day and going with "the girls" to Shipshewana. This is our annual trip. Been doing so for at least 7 years ( number I have been with the state police) and probably more before that.

I worked on Sunday so I could have Tuesday off without using a vacation day.

Funny think happened at work today. I GOT STUCK UNDER A TRUCK!!!!! Talk about scary. I was doing my inspection under the 1st set of duals and when I tried to roll back out on my creeper, my belt got stuck. Okay, I thought take the belt off and get off the creeper. I got under here, I can get out. Yeah right. Apparently while I was under the truck, the automatic levelers lowered the front end and low and behold I was basically trapped. Yikes! The driver was saying I could make it out at the back under a support bar. I told him if I got stuck he was getting a ticket. He laughed and said I would fit. Ok my head and upper chest fit but my rib cage got caught. I was finally able to get out between the wheels. I was filthy!!!!!!!

Lora,

Your plight made me shiver. I have claustraphobia and that would have broght on a real panic attack. I'm happy to hear you weren't crushed.

Hubby and I are leaving on the 11th for our vacation to New England and won't be back until the first 233k of November. Let me know if you are available in the next 2 weeks or we'll have to wait until November.

Have fun in Shipshewana. I love the town but wish it would go back to being less busy. I like to go during the week instead of the weekend. I always find something that wants to just jump into my car and go home with me.

Theresa Sue,

Hubby reminded me that we'd need a good root stock upon which to graft a scion (buds). Would you like some seeds? I can start saving and drying them. I know that would be a long drawn out process to get to the tree stage. The young trees from the original tree in Ohio are available from the National Arbor Society, or at least they were 4 years ago.
