| I am excited to be joining this group! I manage a 12 acre educational farm for city kids to learn about raising livestock and poultry. We currently have 24 adult sheep and 5 new lambs born in the last two weeks and 40 chickens. People say to me that I am not really a farmgirl since I don't live on the farm - I simply rent the land and manage the animals but when I put in 8 hour days lambing, mucking barns, building coops, giving shots etc. I somehow think how can I become any more of a farmgirl??? Two things I would like to ask are if anyone has any ideas for battling Starlings - we are being eaten out by them. They gobble all the chicken feed and are still getting through the deer netting I put all around the coop's yard and roof. The second thing is if anyone has a back issue of Hobby Farm - the issue that featured the Leicester Longwool sheep. We raise that breed and I am looking for that issue. Thanks! Sara |

I don't have any of those mags but I am glad you are here! Welcome from Texas! There are a lot of girls here that probably know about your questions...I "live" in the city but my heart is in farmland!

Wow Sara, sounds like you have a dream job! You are very clearly a farmgirl! Most of us are farmgirls at heart! So glad you found us. I wish I could answer your questions, but unfortunately I can't. I do work as a volunteer at the Morton Arboretum and I will ask them about the starlings. I won't have a meeting until March 18 though, hopefully you will have an answer before then!

Hi Sara! I see you are in Baltimore. My uncle is in Frederick and my mom used to work at Hopkins. I am about 3 hrs away...not too bad. Maybe the next time I am in town I could bring the kiddies up for a feild trip.??? I know they would love to see all the animals. The only Starling advice I have is to get a smaller wire that they can't fit through. I'm sorry, I know that's prob not the answer you were looking for and someone more experienced than myself might have a better answer for ya. Good Luck and welcome!!!

Sounds like you have your hands full. I'm sorry I can't help you with the Starling issue.
Is the magazine Hobby Farm or Hobby Farm Home?

| Wow, I finally solved the starling problem. I used small deer netting over most of it and other more difficult spaces I used hardware cloth. Now the holes are too small for the starlings to get through and the chickens are calmer and have food and water. The back issue I'm loking for is from Hobby Farm Magazine and it is the issue with the Leicester Longwool sheep article. Thanks, Sara |

Welcme! I too am a gal from "Merlin." Where is the farm, if you don't mind me asking? Also, with all your sheep and little lambs-I'm sure you know about the upcoming Sheep and Wool festival at the Howard County fairgrounds. It's the 2nd weekend in May. We go every year for wool and to connect with the sheep. It's a blast! Again, welcome and look forward to you sharing with us all.

You are definatly a farmgirl Sara!!!! What a wonderful job to have...I would LOVE that!!
I will look around and see if I still have the issue of Hobby farm you are looking for. I sometimes buy them..and I am sure I bought that one. Just not sure if I kept it, or passed it along to one of my sis in laws.
I used the netting like that around the eaves on our house when we lived in CAlif for swallows..they were a real nuisance there...and have used the same netting to keep owls out of my chicken yard. It is useful stuff..the netting.
