In our family, the maternal granparents are Nana and Pupu, fraternal are Granma and Grandpa. Saves confusion!
My Nana Mabel was the best Nana in the world. She basically raised us kids, so I am proud to be a Nana !!
My grandchildren are the best thing in my life right now.The space between my lap and heart was so empty before they came! |

My mom's mother was my "Baba" which is Ukranian. I never knew my other grands.
Our children have lots of "grands" because my dad and DH's dad have remarried. So... there is Grampa and Gramma (my dad and step mom), Baba (my mom), Nana (DHs mom), and Papa and SueSue (DHs dad and step mom). And quite recently we lost both Great Gramma Myers (my step mom's mom), and Great Gramma Dot (DH's gramma).

My kids call my both my parents and my husbands parents Glam-ma and Plop-plop. Until we can start getting the pronounciation down right the grandmas get to feel glamourous and the grandpas get to feel like the old plop plops that they are :)
I used to call my grandma grandma, and my grandpa poppa.
you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive. |

My one and only (perfect by the way) grandaughter called us Gaggy and Paca. Gaggy..yep..isn't that nice? Oh well. I tried to get her to call me granny and that is her version and it stuck. She is very stubborn and won't call me anything else. She calls all her other grandparents (her mom's parents have divorced and remarried and she has 3 great grand parents) Grandma or Grandpa and their first name.
I grew up calling my dad's parents Grandma and Grandpa and my mom's parents..which I was much much closer to Mom and Pappy. My mom has always been Mama.My oldest boys, who had my grandparents around until they were in high school called them Grandma Mom and Pappy (they got some funny looks for the Grandma Mom thing!)

| My 4 year old granddaugher calls me Nana and her grandpa Papa. She calls her other grandparents Grandma and Papa. My mom is Greatgranny to her. I called my grandparents grandma and grandpa. |

I have been ever so blessed to have know my great- grandmas! Fraternal Grandma was 'nonnie', in '78 she started a charm braclet for all her great grandaughters, the first charm said'nonnie' with the year engraved on the back. My Maternal great grandma was'gram' full blood Italian and the sweetest little lady you ever did meet. Towards the end of her life , she had reverted back to her native tounge, It was so fun communicating with her.
My Grandparents, Have just been Grandma (last name) Grandpa (last name) That's no fun. Although, To my children , They are Grammie, and Gram, and Papa.
My Husbands parents are Oma and Opa, due to the Dutch heritage. My Parents are 'drama' sounds like grama. My dad is just grandpa , but fo the longest time he was 'cra-pa'Which left us all on the floor in laughter. And to say 'just' grandpa doesn't really tell how wonderful all the grandparents have been.

My grand parents have always been Mommom and Poppop. On my Dad's side it's mommom Taylor and Poppop Taylor but we didn't know them as well. I love what my nieces and newfews call my Step-Mother-in-law - MaGa. Sometimes I call my Grandmom on my Mom's side Oma which is German, but she's really my Mommom.

paternal ggm was Momou (ma moo)
paternal gm and gf were Ma'maw and Pa'paw (the first syllable is really quick, not drawn out like maw-maw or paw-paw) They were Cajun and spoke little English. I spoke Cajun French to them when I was little but all I remember now are the slang and cuss words! With Cajun being an unwritten language, I sure do wish I had retained more of it.
maternal gm and gf were Nanny and PawPaw
My daughters call my mother MiMi (mee mee), and my husband's parents Grammy and PawPaw.
Both hubby's gf are called Pappaw (pap paw) One gm is Nanny and the other is T-wa. My husband couldn't say grandma and somehow T-wa came out and it has stuck. The whole town calls her T-wa. All us family members can't decide how to spell it, though.....T-wa, Te wah, Tee-wah, Twa, etc....but, we all say it the same.

I called my grandparents MamaTom and DaddyTom and Bondon and Grandad. My kids called their grandparents Nonnie and Papa and NutherNonnie and NutherPapa. Weird I know. Now our only grandson who will be 2 on the 26th is calling us Jerry and Suzi!!! Although we are hoping to be Opa and Yetta when he is a little older.

okay..let's see, our two youngest g-sons (almost 3 yrs old) call me GIGI and my DH Poppa, the two middle ones (7 and 8) call us Grammi and Poppa and our oldest g-son (12) calls us Grandma and Grandpa. Our 7 yr old g-son refers to his paternal grandma as "Horsey Grandma" cuz she raises horses. (Makes me glad I don't raise pigs!!  ) Our 2 daughters refer to us as Mumsie and Poopsie!
My own g-parents were gone by the time I was born..but I would have loved to call them Nanna and Poppa!

All my step-grandkids, and there are lots, call me grandma Kennie Lyn, and dh is grandpa. Our biological grandson has always called us Ma and Pa, I never thought I would be old enough to be a Ma, but I am. Must be the Little House influence, but I am sure grandson didn't know about Little House when he named us. His great grandfather was called Big Pa. He started to call him Old Pa, but changed it to Big Pa. He is 9 and will refer to us as grandma and grandpa, but in talking to us he always says Pa and Ma.

lovin' all the 'grands' names .. o.k. .. here's our names:
i didn't know my grandparents on either side of the family .. they all passed away before i was born or when i was very young (but they were all olde at the time though) ... my momma and daddy must have started late! our children called honey hunk's parents: bubbie and zadie (jewish) .. they are gone now too.
our two grandchildren by our oldest daughter call us: Grammie and Grandaddy.
Lucas is still 'switching' and coming up with what is comfy for him:
sometimes we are: GA and GA-DA
o.k. .. "I" started that one .. cuz' when he was a new infant, i was holding him in my arms and he looked up at me and gurgled: "GA" .. and i exclaimed to everyone .. that his FIRST WORD was MY NAME! and GA-DA just 'went with' GA.
As he gets a little older, everyone is Nana this and Poppa that. AND ALL of his grandparents and great grandparents on his dad's side of the family are still living.
I am gently steering him to: Grammie and Grandaddy rather than
Nana Frannie and Poppa Hank. Those are sweet .. but i love our GRANDPARENT titles!!

the tradion on my dad's side of the family is that the first grandchild creates the name. My eldest sister called my dad's parents "Mammy" and "Pa" and that is what we called them until they passed away. My mother's parents didn't speak English (French). I never knew them. My older cousins called them, Grandmere and Grandpere..french for grandmother and grandfather. My children call my parents Mimi and Papa. They call my husband's parents GramMa Bingo and GramPa Bingo..after a game my son and mother-in-law invented. He threw a ball..she caught it in a basket and shouted, "bingo!" My last living grandparent died 7 years ago this spring, BUT I have a precious, blond-haired 3 year old niece who is a little TREASURE and who just loves my mom. For a long time, she called my mom "nanna", then when she started talking a little better, mom and my sister tried to teach her to say "grandma". But instead of grandma, she says "damma". My mom just laughs and says, "well I PREFERRED nanna to damma, but she's still just a little girlie!"

I called my maternal grandparents, "Mema" & "Pepa". I couldn't pronounce grandma & grandpa, I guess. I was the first grandchild, so all the others called them the same thing.
I called my fraternal grandparents, "Grandpa Van & Grandma Van" (last name was Vanderwerker). And my great grandpa & grandma were just Grandpa & Grandma.
My little grandbaby, Caleb, calls me (or will when he can talk) - Granny. I like it. I'm still pretty young and I like being called Granny.

Well, I called my Mom's parents Granma and Granpa (notice the "D" is lacking). For some reason, my sister refers to Granpa as "Gramps." When we were little we called Granma, Obaa-chan, Japanese for Grandma. My Granma when she gave us cards signed it in Japanese, Gouranma(this is the phonetic spelling).
We never got to know my Dad's parents. My grandfather died way before I was born and my sister and I were just frightened of my grandmother. She had one of those multi-footed canes and she stomped around hunched over. |

My Maternal G-ma was Mamaw, G-pa was Daddoo. My son called my Mom, Momeye and my Dad, Popeye cause he smoked a pipe and had very muscular arms. The other 2 grandkids called them Granny and Pappaw.

| In my family my mom's name was Jean and so she became MaJean and my Dad PaJean. My nephew that the word for Grandmother/father was Jean so my sister's mother and father in-law became Ma & PaJean Detty. It stuck for all the grandkids and until my parents passed away that was what all of us called them. What a sweet memory. For my own Grandbaby, he calls all women Booca so I have became GranBooca. Isn't sweet that they speak their own language at two years of age. |

My Dad's parents are Grandma Boysen (86- the last grand I have on this earth)and Grandpa Boysen in LA- parents to 13 children!!! and my Mama's parents are Gramma and Grampa - they lived just around the corner and put in alot of day to day time with me- Oh I miss them so!
My daughter calls my hubby's Mama who passed last fall Gramma Ninia (Virginia)- she always talks about her, seeing her in dreams, Gramma Ninia tells her about fairies, she loves in my belly (hmm), etc. and calls his Dad Grampa Dennis.
She calls my Mama Monkey (we have no idea where that came from but it is sticking) and my Dad Grampa.
Apparently the straight Grand titles are matriarchal in my family- men's relatives get to add on a first or last name....
We also have a beloved Baba who is my great aunt who passed on this year...
So sad to have our Grands leaving us year by year but they do hang around in interesting ways.

Yes, the quote was in "The Hours". The quote just means so much to me. My mom has always seemed so afraid of everything, that I swore a long time ago, that I would live life and not be scared. Sometimes I'm scared, but I still plow ahead. I will not avoid things in life, but I will try to tackle them.

 I want to apologize for this last post. It was a bit of a downer and we all come here to feel good and be happy. I just worry so much about my Mom. She's getting worse lately and just seems to have given up on life. I'm so worried about her, but I can't make her change. Just have to be there for her.

The names are all so sweet - I call my grandparents Grandma and Grandpa, and my other set I called Nanny and Bop (Nanny is still with us, Bop is not) - he was such an amazing person. I miss him). My little one calls his grandparents Grandma and Grandpa and his other set De-De and Jim. It's SO cute to hear him! One of the funniest things is that my dad's mom calls my dad "Jimmy-boy" and so now, my little one calls him that sometimes, too - it's hilarious! I love it!
Debbie - don't apologize! Sometimes we need to say what we need to say, and get some support for ourselves. It's not a downer - I can tell you love your Mom, and I'm sure she can feel that, too. That's the greatest thing we can do for each other...
