Morning all, I am Marion and I just joined. Am the mother of two adult children. My daughter lives with her husband in Missoula, Montana and my son is in Boise, Idaho. I have a 15-acre farm in the mountains of Virginia. My mother's family is Cherokee from the Virginia's southwestern mountains and my father is Cherokee from North Carolina.
I spent my early years in the mountains with my mom and dad and after the war, we moved into the Washington, DC area so my dad could find work. I yearned for years to get back to the mountains and finally found a nice little cabin on the side of a mountain about 12-miles from Timberville, Virginia. I still work in the DC area, so no critters yet, but once I retire, I will have the chickens (already have a coop waiting for them), some goats, a mule and possibly a steer.
I attend and dance at the local Pow Wows and just last week attended the 9th annual Shenandoah Valley Pow Wow in Quicksburg, Virginia.
My mother and grandmother taught me many of the old ways, so I know how to make lye soap, tan deerhides, make clothing out of buckskin (which is a whole lot easier than cloth), sew by hand and on a sewing machine, crochet, embroider, skin game, can fruits and vegetables, shoot a shotgun, rifle, handgun, and my dad taught me how to hunt and throw a tomahawk.
I enjoying visiting with friends, reading, making traditional native chokers, dance shawls, embrodiering, crocheting, making leather pouches, cooking, canning, hiking, and Pow Wow dancing.

Hi Marion,
I, also, am brand new to the forums but I think we've found a home! I am impressed with your background and the skills that you have learned along the way. I don't hunt, but I do garden, can, knit, sew, embroider and such. I am retired so finally have the time to indulge in these activities.
I hope to get to know you very well and welcome! |

Thank you for your wonderful welcome. Yes, we have indeed found a home, and we have much in common. We could spend hours sitting on the front porch doing our embroidery. I wish I knew how to knit, but that was a skill I wasn't taught. I will be able to retire in about three years, then I can indulge in my activities.

Wow, Marion! Sounds like you'll be a natural teacher for all of us with all of your talents and skills! I love that your mother and grandmother passed along so much knowledge to you, and I look forward to learning from you! Welcome to MJF!

Hi Marion and welcome to the forum! Wow, you are a very talented lady. I wish I knew how to do some of what you know so I hope you will share some of your skill with all of us. I'd love to see pictures of some of the wonderful things you make.
