| When I was little my grandmother used to have a little fabric sack that smelled like pine trees. I think it even had little pine trees on it and had either broken pine cones or pine needles in it. Is anyone familiar with this or know of such a thing today? |

I'm not familiar, but it sounds so interesting. What did your grandmother use it for?

I think it was an early version of potpourri. It was probably meant to be in a closet or something but she always kept it out for when I would visit because I loved to smell it.
Now that I think of it, I think it had little pine cones printed on the fabric and maybe a small one tied around the neck. I'm reaching back over thirty years here so be patient with my lack of memory. |

There were little campy souvenirs that were sold, filled with pine needles. I've seen a few of them over the years.

Serena, do you know where any are currently being sold? I'm being horribly homesick right now and looking for something comforting and nostalgic and for some reason this is the one thing that seems to be on my mind. |

You may be remembering bags of cedar chips. My family always had those in their closets to ward off moths, etc. And they smelled so good. I hope you find what you are longing for! Being homesick is no fun! Keep visiting us here, and it will help!

We used to make these in girl scouts, you use pine needles that have a white stripe on the under part of each needle. They are short soft needles.I wish I could remember what kind of pine it was. they are very aromatic. Then just fill any small pouch and sew the ends shut. It reminds me of camping or the north woods.

| Those little bags from the 30's and 40's were made as souveniers, and they were full of BALSAM PINE. Hope this helps. |

Oh my gosh! My eyes were tearing up just looking at them. The fabric is different but I'll bet the scent is still the same. Too bad the internet doesn't have 'scratch-n-sniff', I wanted so badly to smell one. I'll order one or two and let everyone know how they are.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words and suggestions.
I only had one grandparent when I was little and being the eldest female grandchild I was the closest to my grandmother who died when I was eight. I don't have any pictures of her other then what is in my head and I have a few pieces of her furniture but lately I've been needing another 'sense' of her and started thinking of these.
I'm going to do the 'snoopy' dance. |

Hey Dar, I can't seem to open the links above but I have a sack it's green and it had little pine trees on it. You could have if you'd like. I'm sure if it's what your remembering probably not but I'm not using it so I thought I'd offer it. I understand home sickness.

Melissa, I'd love to have it if you no longer want it-I'm a big fan of recycling (ok, I'm addicted to garage sales). Anyway, is there something I could give you in return? Do you have a collection or hobby that I might be able to contribute to? |
