I'm taking the Master Gardener Class through the Michigan State University Extension Office starting Jan. 20th. I've wanted to do this for years, but with baby's and growing children's schedules - it didn't quite work out until this year. My husband's encouragement really helped with the decision too.
Has anyone else gone through the class with a local extension office?

I have not, but I would love to. Can't wait to hear what you thought of the class.

| I took the class through the Ohio State Extension. They had many educated speakers from Ohio State, and the class was very well planned. We had a fun group of people & we cooked for every class so of course that was the highlight. My only criticism, is that since it was through the extension, everything had to be tried & true, so many organic solutions that may or may not work were not covered, as they were not scientifically proven. But the good info & great informative notebook I got was well worth the $100 dollars(for a 16 week, 4 hrs a week class with top of the line speakers!) |

Ohio is a better deal than MI for sure! The class is $325 - which seems high, but I think that it can only benefit my business. It will be for 16 weeks too - 4 hrs/class. I'm looking forward to it - good to hear the positive report.

I completed the level one course last spring through MT State Extension.It's been a long time since they've offered it in our county. I learned so MUCH!!! It was certainly worth my time and money and I'm looking forward to the next level when it's offered. Enjoy!!!

I went throught the Oklahoma State University Master Gardeners classes and graduated three years ago. It was a great program with wonderful instructors and I really got alot out of it. I enjoy the meetings and activities we have going on now. I also attended the Master Cattleman classes a couple years ago and they were just as good.

I took it two years ago in Ohio in a rural county, and loved it. Our county extension agent went above and beyond to train us. Our class started a community garden in the local community last year, which was very successful. One of the regrets I had about moving was leaving such a great group of friends.
I am looking forward to signing up in Michigan but Macomb county is so big and populous I'm sure it will be a different experience. I think the Kent County area MG's have a world-famous program on rain gardens which I may take advantage of here - we have some drainage issues in our new place.

MN has its own master gardener classes. I've been to a couple in our local county and they were great. Ours are around $40, if I remember right and are one day. Master gardeners have to complete a minimum number of hours a year of training, but the classes are also available to the public. The last one had info on shrub roses, nature photography, attracting hummingbirds and several other subjects. There was a yummy lunch and door prizes and a little gift bag for each of us.

Yes, I completed the Lafayette Master Gardener Program through the LSU Ag Center County Extension in Lafayette, LA. I must admit, I haven't used the knowledge as much as I'd thought I might, or hoped, and I don't participate in the volunteer program any longer, due to health issues and another attempt @ earning a college degree. The program feature that I most enjoyed and found most instructive was the volunteer demo gardens. We were required to volunteer 40 hours during the year...the demo gardens were informative by nature...nothing like doing the work and seeing it come to fruition. My class started the first organic vegetable demonstration garden, with great success and it's been organic since then. Most MG program make field trips available, have incredible speakers for the monthly meetings, & provide an excellent social network.
Many folks have the misconception that MG's become walking encyclopedia's or that we're available to do the labor for folks. That was one blessing our instructors shared...we're not expected to know it all, but to know where to go to find answers, and we were only to be expected to give instruction, not to do the work of the gardener. The program taught us to use the resources available.
Now, there were those who's passion made it possible for them to learn every plant by it's latin name and that's a wonderful gift. I just found it's a program that teaches how to garden for your specific locale, and that has been most helpful. I encourage you to experience it, it's very fulfilling!

| Hubby insisted I take it along with him through Purdue University extension. He's the MG in the family and always will be!! He knows so much he could teach the class himself!!But it was fun and useful for me, too. I think you'll enjoy it. |

I'm convinced that the more you learn, the more you realize there is to learn. I'm thankful to be challenged and I have to confess that I was a little brain strained after our first 4 hour lecture on plant science. I completely understand my 3rd graders plant science notes - I had to concentrate for these plant science notes :)!
