Amen Annika! I've been spending quite a bit of time plotting (pun intended) my garden for this spring. I'm already getting antsy and we had below zero temps here last week! Whatever will I do until it warms up? At least I can get potatoes in the ground in March. Every flat, sunny spot in the house will have seeds starting in them until it's warm enough to plant outside.
I need to build a hoop house or green house to ease my itchy green thumb!

This makes three of us! I have made my orders already because last year I had many of my products sell out. There has been such a surge in people growing gardens that I was told that they just don't have enough of some varieties. Great for the seed companies, but not great when you love a particular variety.
I also have seeds started all over my house starting next month. I love it! Mother's Day is usually when it is safe to plant here in my region. Every year my husband and kids know that all I want for mother's day is to work in the garden all day with my family. We start early and end late. We always get the old cast iron pot out and cook green beans, potatoes, and ham over an open fire all day to nibble on. Sometimes my hubby even fixes cornbread on the fire. It is trully my favorite day of the year. I love the change os seasons...I love laefing through my seed catalogs all winter, I love planting in the spring, I love weeding and pruning in the summer, I love the harvest, but I am always ready for winter again. The harvest seems to wear me out. I don't know what I would do without my lazy winter days to regroup.

I couldn't wait--I received my seed order yesterday! A couple are still on back order. I've never had a garden before so this is really exciting. I have one frame built for a raised bed and need to build another. Then build some trellises. We still have snow on the ground and here I am planning for spring. I love winter, but having a garden gives me something to look forward to. cindy

No snow on the ground at the moment, and I love winter too...but the garden is calling me! I need to build some raised beds too and make trellises as well...if the weather stays mild I may go start in on the bed building soon !
http://www.underwoodgardens.com/ I just got this seed book, they are a bit pricey, but have a few really intriguing seeds =)

i can't wait to start working the dirt! too early here though so I have to be happy with looking at seed catalogues. I can start tomatoes and peppers in February, after we have our big seedy Saturday. I like to try new stuff every year. i just read an article on litchi tomoatoes. Has anybody ever heard of/tried those? My guess is I'll have to order seeds from the States.

Can't wait can't wait can't wait!!!! Actually I have to because I have another couple months at least before it is time to start tomatoes....heavy sigh. I actually went out and pulled some weeds yesterday - just had to get my hands in the dirt. It is too wet to walk into the garden though so I have to peer at it longingly through the fence Amy Grace

Me too! It has been in the upper fourties for over a week now so all the snow is melting and the sun hits the dirt. Then the air has that wonderful warm/fresh earth smell and it makes my fingers twitch to get in and digging in the garden which is oddly enough still covered with snow!
Anyone planning extraordinary measures this year to combat weeds? This year I am going to purchase some of that black weed fabric and combine it with newspaper over the soil. I am hoping the two together will help keep the weeds out. I am not sure if I want to cover the weed fabric with mulch or not. I probably won't during the cool part of the early season and then mulch it as day time temps start rising so I don't scald the poor plants.

Alee...I must have the weedy-est garden space ever! I'm going to use weed cloth and later, mulch. I'm thinking of getting some of the red plastic tomato ripener stuff to see if that will combat night time temperature lows that we have sometimes in late summer. But it's going to take extraordinary work to battle the weeds!

My space might rival yours in terms of weeds Annika - I get 6 foot tall ones in no time flat - there are a little less every year though so I guess that's progress!!

Hello. Did someone say weeds??? I know this may sound extreme, but my husband and I finally found something that works for us. It took us seven years to get to this point though. We built raised beds everywhere except for a small plot at the end of our garden. We tried everything from weed cloth, mulch, gravel, straw, and newspaper. We did it all, but weeds grew like crazy anyway...I still had to weed around the edges of my raised beds daily or it got out of control. Last year we laid sod between all the raised beds. It was the best thing we ever did. No weeds...we just mow the paths every week or two with our push mower. My graden looks so neat and tidy. All I have to keep up with are the raised beds and corn patch. It made gardening so much more relaxing.
