Just a question for you gardening gals out there. I have had a really bad gopher prob last 2 years. We sodded our yard, they distroyed it. Last year they chewed off rose bushes I have had growing for 20 years.Now they have started on my garden. So far I have lost all but 3 of my broccli plants. Cry! I live in So Ca so I garden year round. My hubby has trapped many of them but after a few weeks they are back. So as it is time to replace my raised beds I am thinking of making them a bit deeper and putting a wire mesh on the bottom to keep those pesky gophers out of my plants. Has anyone else had any luck with this? Need to do something they are eating me out of house and home.

The best solution is what you already know, small wire mesh at the bottom, if you have to use more then one piece, making sure to wire the pieces together tightly, so they can't get thru that way. Also put whirly-gigs in your beds, the vibrations help keep them away, they hate it. If you don't have dogs that will dig the gopher holes, they also have claw traps that you can put in their holes that have a chain atached to a spike, that you have outside the hole. Good luck

Spray with castor oil they hate the smell the taste and everything I have driven many an gopher and mole away with this stuff.

| CASTOR OIL! WOW I will have to try it. For 2 yrs. everytime we plant grapevines or blueberries they eat them up! I have had it! |

Wow sounds worth a try. Do you spray the plants, ground or holes/mounds. I have to do something. They even ate 2 oleander plants and they are poison.

LoL. I have a pug. As hard as she tries she can't get her flat face in the hole. I laugh really hard some time as I see her cocking her head from side to side as she can hear the gopher underground. She will did the holes a bit but she has never caught any. Now my cat on the other hand will catch them but there just seems to be more than she can eat. Yes if she catches them she eats them. Yuk!

What about groundhogs? Will the castor oil work with them too? We have a BIG one on our property that we tried to live trap last year, but were unsuccessful :( My oldest boys (4 and 2) could literally fall into his hole, that's how big he is. I have a feeling I'm going to have to be nasty with him if he gives me trouble with my garden this year (we weren't in this house last year).
