I picked up a copy of MaryJane's magazine at my local store the other day and was instantly enthralled by it! My only real farm experience has been glorious summers spent as a child, on my great-aunt Anne and great-uncle Elmer's farm in Alberta, Canada. What fun that was! I have a veggie garden, fruit trees, and flowers that I grow in my own yard--so I guess I'm in the "suburban" farmgirl category. I love to quilt, and have been doing that for over 30 years. Even have my own home version quilting machine (HQ16). I had a wee quilting business going for a while, but decided I wasn't having enough time to do my OWN quilts, so now I just quilt for myself..and friends now and again. Three children, all grown up. My daughter is a park ranger in Alaska, I have a son, daughter-inlaw and granddaughter (15 months old) in Utah, and a son and daughter-inlaw living locally. Hubby and I have been married 36 yrs; 22 of them were spent moving here and there across the U.S., thanks to the Air Force. We moved back "home" when he retired, and now he's on his 2nd career--this time with the FAA.
Our weather has been very spring-like for January, which is driving me crazy--I want to go play in the garden, but it really IS too early to plant.  *sigh Back to paging through the seed catalogs... |

Welcome, Yvonne! You're in my neck of the woods. :-) If you ever want to meet for tea/coffee let me know; I'd love to meet up with a local farmgirl.
Also, you are cordially invited to join our local chapter of farmgirls, the Bees in our Bonnets in the 'Burbs. We're meeting up again at the end of February.

A warm welcome Y'vonne~~~I'm an eastern Wa. farmgirl fan, we are warmish over here for this time of year and it sure does give you the "dig in the dirt" bug!! I hope to be able to move back to my hometown, Enumclaw, sometime in the future. Enjoy the forum, you can learn anything you ever wanted or hoped to, right here!!

Welcome Yvonne and hi to all you other Washingtonians! I dont see anyone from the Palouse on the welcome wagon yet, thought I'd sent a little shout out. The wheat is sprouting green now and making me think of flowers and gardens growing. Hoping it stays nice!

Yep this weather is wonderfully Terrible! it feels like we should be out playing in the dirt getting our
dirt manicures but deep down we know there are a few more freezes to come our way.... Bummer!

In what park is your daughter in Alaska? Does she work for interpretation, resource management, etc.?
Back in a former life (1980s) I was also a NPS ranger. I worked at Custer Battlefield (now Little Bighorn Nat'l Battlefield in MT), Grand Canyon, Shenandoah (VA), Wind Cave (SD), and Craters of the Moon (ID). I worked in interpretation, seasonally, in all but the last park and then I did entrance station and patroling, breaking into people's cars when they locked their keys in them, etc.
The last summer I applied I wanted either Denali or Glacier. Glacier made an offer but it was a week after my to be husband accepted a job at a hospital in Whitehorse, Yukon for the summer. I did get to Denali but only as a visitor that fall.
I'd love to hear more about your daughter's experiences, location, etc.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I appreciate all the messages. Karin, my daughter is a law enforcement park ranger at Denali. She's been at Boston National Historic site, Yosemite for training, Mt. Rainier here in WA state (my favorite place for her, 'cause it was so close to us), New River Gorge, WV and Kings Canyon Nat. Park in CA--plus a short stay in Georgia for FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center). She went to the university of Fairbanks, though, and found she really loves Alaska, so Denali is her dream job. I love Alaska too..in the summer! How do they survive those long cold dark winters? BRRRR. Not for me. Sounds like you've been some fun places too, Karin! If you get to Denali again, look for Park Ranger Liz. ;-)
One nice thing about my daughter, is she has the travel bug (she may have gotten her dad's blue eyes, but THAT is something she got from me) She has dragged us with her on trips to New Zealand, Scotland and just last month, off to South Africa. Incredible. I didn't think I'd like Africa, but I found I love it. And yes...I did bring back fabric!
Kimberly, thanks for the invite! I'll have to check it out. My husband travels a bit with his job--and there are rumblings of a trip to Eugene, OR coming up next month--I get to go with him when he drives (rather than flies) so I might be packing up my sewing machine and quilty projects for a couple of days out of town "retreat." Have to wait and see--this is one of the advantages to being retired and having an empty nest!
Hay Diane! How do you like Air Force life? I kind of miss it. Where's the incentive to clean out the closets if no moving to a new place is involved? sigh.
Still waiting for my membership packet to arrive. I want a farmgirl number TOO! Thanks again for all the welcomes. Waving at you from Washington (where it is supposed to be rainy..again...) HEY! All my bulbs are sprouting! I want spring... |

Howdy Yvonne from SW Washington! Keep watching for your packet...I remember how excited I was to receive mine! And you're right...it is rather spring-like here...just don't blink! About May, I start thinking about erecting a tent over the garden area, just so I can play in the dirt! Spring can't come soon enough for me!

I'm with you! We have had a bit of a tease with warmer temps last week out here in MA. Calling to the gardner in me! The crocus are up and lightly covered with a dusting of snow that fell last night. I'm ready to order in some new spring chickens too! I was thinking about silkies but the " ladies" over in the "Barnyard" advised against it due to the fact they think our older girls might be agressive to a smaller, younger breed. I think I will just add a few more auracana's.. They are very hardy and lay the prettiest eggs and I think they could hold their own in the Hen House!
I have only been here for a week and I just love it.. The girls are all so helpful, friendly and talented... check out some of the blogs here! It's amazing what farmgirls can do!
