I grew-up on the beach in sunny southern Californa. I have now lived in Minnesota for 20 years. My husband and I have a 10 acre hobby farm - miniature horses, goats, chickens and too many cats and dogs! We cann all our produce and sell fresh produce, eggs, and cider at the farmer's market close to us. The garden hase been a life lesson for my two boys, especially when we harvest green beans. It's hot, sweaty work. Many times they would stand up and look down the row to see how much farther they had to go. I would say, "Just keep your head down and keep picking, you'll get there." Isn't that true of many things in life?

My favorite thing to can durring harvest is cider and juice. I have two danish steam juicers. From them I get piping hot, clear, jewel colored juice that goes straight into sterile jars that seel themselves. Little work, big payoff, no waste. (the chickens eat the pulp)

I tend to be on the melancholy side. Martin Luther said that when he was depressed he would go out "amongst my pigs, which put me in a good humour." I go out with my goats. My lovely Mama goat is sweet and attentive.

Any Farmgirls around me? I'm near Mankato, MN.

Roxanne G.

Welcome from MN! We are near Anoka. It's nice to hear from another MN farmgirl. Sounds like you are a busy mama. I could learn a lot from you. You say you're melancholy...but I think you have a very realistic attitude. Or maybe we are just two peas from the same pod. :)

I think you will like it here!

Howdy Roxanne, From NE Ohio. I love your Farmgirl Spirit already, "Keep your head down and keep picking, you'll get there!" What a great signature line. You're gonna love it here. These gals are so sweet and helpful. It's nice to add another Sista to the collection! Welcome!

Hello, Roxanne,
I'm your neighbor across the border (SD) but spent a time or two in Mankato during my college years. College was in New Ulm.

And I understand completely the melancholy especially at this time of the year. Getting outside is a sure cure. We have 2 mini horses + 3 talls. They're all beautiful, but our one horse has "the eyes" that you lose yourself in and then feel better after being surrounded by all that beauty.

We have many of the same things but I don't have a juicer. You have my curiosity on that one. What do you have for favorite apple varieties on your acreage? We have 9 apple trees w/8 different varieties (what's the fun in having all the same?!) + plus plum, pear, and apricot. Honeycrisp and Honeygold are front runners for apples here.

Welcome, from another newbie!

Hi Roxanne,
I live between Lonsdale and Faribault. Its good to see you here at MJF. We have a huge garden and are developing a dwarf fruit tree orchard; apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, apricots and experimenting with some plants that are borderline hardy here. Would you be interested in swapping cider for strawberries or raspberries this coming summer? We've also got 10 grapevines started and the latest thing in the planing stages in increasing the vineyard, found a grower by Mapleton with 130 varieties!

Welcome Roxanne from the Fingerlakes area of NY. There's still a lot of snow cover here.
We have 2 dogs, 1 indoor cat and 12 chickens. Not as much livestock as you. But we are supposed to be taking it easy in retirement.... We have five acres and love gardening.

Hi Roxanne,
Glad you found us.
While I don't have any great farm critters to lift my spirits when the blues hit, just going out into the beauty and peace of nature usually does it for me.
Just being where it is still and quiet.
Thanks for sharing.

Blessings, staci
