Hello Farmgirls Sisterhood:
Ok so March is just around the corner. Our days are longer. I know many of us have tons of snow. I am trying to "Think Positive". I have started to review catalogs to get my garden flower beds going. I can't wait to go to the local nursery and walk the grounds.
We built our house 5 years ago. It was an open 10 acres. No trees, no nothing. We have put up fences, to keep the deer from eating the trees that we planted. We built our chicken coop for our chickens. We have put up a shed for our pet sheep (5) Ollie, Lena, Sebrina, Buck, and Becky. We will be getting baby chicks this spring along with turkeys. Our chickens keep the grasshoppers down. Last year was the worst.
So this years projects: Finish up a flower bed we started in the fall, built our sun room, built our ponies a small shed, oh yes go on some camping trips..
So the question to you all: Are you thinking Spring yet? What new projects will you be working on this spring? Just wondering what you all are going to be up to this spring and summer. I know my quilting gets put up, because I want to be outside as much as I can. |

Yes, yes and YES!!!!I saw another robin today and I think I saw my crocus'starting to peek up from the dirt.
I've been going thru seed catalogs, planning my gardens and waiting for that thaw to come.
I have two chickens and three ducks and a very small yard, but someday soon we hope to move and have a real yard, but for now we are grateful to have a roof over our heads and food on our table.

Hi Viola from Lilly in Virginia. Most of the time I am right with you on the planting. This year my husband and I our on a new bill of life for a few years. We have just retired and got a camper. You are the first one that has said something about camping. Our trip starts the 13th of May. Stop one in summersit PA some stopes in Ohio on to Mt. Rushmore, to Yellowstone, to Washington State to visit family then onto Alaska before returning home. I'm thinking 3 to 4 months the man says less soon we will see who is right. Maybe you have some input for our trip. Hope to speak to you soon Lilly.

Lol Hosanna!!! I have been thinking gardening since Christmas too!!! :)
You will be able to garden sooner than me I expect, although, I am counting the days until St. Paddy's Day, when I will put my peas in the ground, snow or not!!!
I so want chickens this year! We are renting and our landlord said last year- go ahead, but I am mighty fearful of the whole prospect!!! Especially because one day last October, we had 6, yes 6 skunks heading up our back hill for the house. They thought they were going to winter in our woodshed, but husband stopped them cold....and I do mean cold!
Seeds are ready, garden is planned, ready to start seedlings soon....

I have a SEVERE case of Spring Fever! Definately thinking about the garden (I know it's somewhere under the snow). But am especially excited because my daughter is building me a greenhouse in Ag class and it'll be done in a couple of weeks!!! I can hardly wait :)

Hey Farmgirls - Spring is just around the corner. We had a pair of house finches visit our bird feeder yesterday. My hubby is getting ready to order our chickens for the year. I know we will also have turkeys. We will really have to be careful with our chickens. Yesterday our neighbor across the road informed us that he has a mountain lion on his property. He raises buffalo and elk. He has a pond on his property and so he also has swans and geese. He informed us that the mountain lion has taken up residence on his property. I love sitting on our font porch and watching the buffalo graze in the summer time.

Hey Lilly:
Wow you are comming my way. You will go by my house if you are traveling on I90. Will you be taking in Devils Tower also - that is on your way to Yellowstone also. The fun part is that we are so close to the interstate we can see the cars go by. So you and your hubby might have to get off at my exit and pull your camper in our back yard for the night. Think about it.

Hosanna, I'm right there in the dirt beside ya girl! I can't wait! It is supposed to be possibly into the 60's this week!!!!!!
LOL! We've had a very low snow year, so I'm alternately worrying about drought and possible heavy snow, so ??? I've been dreaming of the garden, painting my home and the ever continuing remodel, since we stopped last year...Can't you just feel the energy of Spring!!!! I'm SO eager to start!

I'm thinking gardening and doing some wintersowing in containers to put on the deck. (only hardy perennials for now) With a foot of snow and more in some areas where it drifted, I can only plan the garden areas. I'll be looking to separate some hostas and coneflowers to share this season.
Those that can start gardening in the ground now, keep us posted so we can share your joys.

I had to go get a few more bluebird houses last week because they are all fighting over the one. I need a few more now. I am so ready for the cold to go away. I cannot seem to get warm anymore. It's beautiful outside today but so cold. We might get some snow later tonight but I am wishing it away.
I started some lettuce and spinach in a cold frame last week and the lettuce is popping up already! I am amazed. I am going to get some more cold frames (or make some more) and start more spinach and lettuces. I already have people wanting produce now. I am also going to make more raised beds. I need some hoop houses. And some cattle panels for climbing things. I could plant more things that run if I can get them off the ground. They won't take up near the space this way. And cattle panels aren't too much money and I can reuse them forever.
I also want to plant some forsythia and azaleas along the driveway. And in the yard. Make an herb and flower gardens. I think the whole month of March will be busy for me. I also need to move some strawberries closer to the water source into raised beds. Oh so much to do out there. If it would only warm up now!
I also started 100 tomato seeds in flats inside last week. I will probably start 100 more when I get more seeds. I am going to have tomatoes this year! I need to find some nasty stuff to spray on the ripe tomatoes that the chickens don't like. I want them out there to get the bad bugs and grubs but they eat every ripe tomato before I can get to it. ANd I am organic here, too. Maybe a garlic spray?
I hope ya'll get alot done at your places. What a fun time. I am ready to get going.

We can see dirt! Well, it's really that the roads have melted enough to see gravel, but I'm taking it as a personal success--like I was personally responsible :). We are scheduled to have a week of near freezing temps with sun so am expecting a lot of melting. I walked out of work at noon yesterday and almost didn't go back.
Our big change for us this year is to start a small sheep flock and we need spring to do that so we can put in some sheep proof fence.
Spring also means our son is graduating so am busy planning on having enough green in the flower beds for the open house. Open house is a week after the normal last frost so I'm pushing the limit on that one. I will be starting more plants inside this year so that they have a little height before I set them out.
Yes...spring is definitely whispering my name...

I can only continue to dream of my garden right now, we still have alot of sno banks and cold temps. But my seeds are ordered and I am still going through my gardening magazines planning my flower pots and beds.
With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts. |

I have been dreaming of gardening all winter long. Doesn't help that we put the chickens in the garden for the winter....I go their daily and dream of planting. I just cleaned up the straw and chicken poo that were spread everywhere. It will all get tilled into the soil, soon I hope. I turned the soil in the carrot box/raised bed and it's soooo pretty! Thick and dark and not clay looking. I want to go plant it now!
I have all my seeds, but I may pick up some more squash seeds. Oh, and hubby wants to plant horseradish. I do need to finalize the layout for the garden. I will be starting some winter sown boxes, and would really love to build some cold frames. I'm having trouble talking myself out of buying the $50 grow light set up down at the feed store...I already have the seed soil and the little jiffy pots.
95% of the snow is gone in the yard, just the shaded places left. That are always last. I do suspect that we'll get a few more skiffs of snow, but it won't amount to much.
The tulips are starting to poke up through the soil. Need to get a fence up so the chickens can't dig them up this year. Or munch off all the greens. We just stacked 7 ton of hay on Sunday, so that ought to keep em busy for a while. I'm sure I'll be finding eggs there soon.
Chicks and turkey poults should be here in a week or two. 32 birds total. I'm just as excited for their arrival as I am for real spring weather.
But I tend to get into trouble trying to rush plants into the ground. Our evening temps still get to the 30's and low 40's in the spring, and not a whole lot higher in the summer. So I crochet carrot and veggie toys inside. And I can areate my little patch of lawn. And try reseeding it again.

Oh yes! We are having strangely warm weather here in Washington. I've done much of the cleanup and pruning. We have started our orchard with bareroot fruit trees, and I planted some additional bareroot berries last weekend. Yesterday it was 65 degrees so I took a chance and planted some lettuce/spinach/chard/beets & peas, as well as sweet peas. The chickens are a layin' and I've turned over the compost bin. This is definitely the furthest along we have ever been this time of year-I love it!

Surely it can't be warmer in WA state today than it is here in KY...LOL...34 degrees and snow...however it is supposed to be in the 60's here this weekend...my DH and I cannot wait to get outside and take care of some things that dreadfully need taking care of...our chickens are already laying lots of eggs and we are hoping to sell some of them...
Seems as if Spring doesn't stay around long enough once it gets here so we need to enjoy every moment of it that we can...

lol Alicia!! I will have that pleasantly stuck in my head all day today!!!
I have planted red leaf lettuce, brussels sprouts, and strawberries. I was feeling impatient to see more green in the yard, so I bought two tomato plants today at a garden store. I want to start some from seed too. I will be making a three part compost system this weekend and cleaning out a layer from the worm compost. I want to plant edibles in my front yard. Great for conversation starters!

| I am really ready for getting out in the garden. It has been a long hard winter, though I've loved the snow. I am trying to edit my garden selections...there is soo much to plant. I am using one of those small wooden pot makers that make small seedling pots out of old newspaper. It is so meditative! This weekend is suppose to be warm and sunny and I just want to get out and clear the garden and get good and muddy! Iris & tulips poking up. I am excited about flowers in the house again...and peonies, my favorite favorite. Also looking forward to foraging the neighborhood for nettles and dandelions and chickweed to gather and eat. Fresh greens! Yes! |

I am planning on new trellis for my pea and bean vines, a chick coop, and finishing the mother-in-laws remodel so we can start ours. We're getting a new bedroom that will actually hold our bed and our dressers. The small 'master' bedroom we're in now only leaves 2 1/2 feet around our king size bed. The outside things will be kept at a minimum this year. Pity. But next year it's all outside things! My DH Promised!

The temp. was in the 70's today. Yes!!! I have spring fever. I have planted Lily and Daliah bulbs, Astilbe and a couple of Rhubarb plants. My Peonies are sending up new shoots, the redbud and dogwood are almost ready to pop. I am so tired of winter, hope spring is here to stay. I plan on tilling my garden spot tomorrow afternoon before it rains again.

Spring has definitely sprung here in Kentucky.. but I started tomatoe seeds indoors in my livingroom about a month ago..they are just about ready to go out..but must wait a little.. got the garden plowed and my husband cut the grass today for the first time.. things are getting green ! Happy Easter !

We are not in the 80's but the sun is out, and most of the snow that we got yesterday is gone. So we might be able to get to our garden in a week - once it dries up. We usually do not get to plant until May. I envy you all that can plant so early. Happy Easter Farmgirls.
