It's time to confess! First of all, you should know that I am not new to sewing.I have been sewing for more than 30 years. It isn't that I don't know any better it's just that I am so excited about finishing a project that I get in a hurry and let the bad habits take over. Some (but not all) of my bad habits are: Starting WAY too many projects at once Not changeing the needle to suit the material. I tend to use a universal needle in a medium size. I constantly misplace my seam ripper. So I use whatever is close by i.e.embroidery scissors, needles and pins are favs I hate to change bobbin thread. I think there should be some kind of chameleon thread that adapts to the color of your project. Last but not least..I sometimes sew in my underwear. I don't plan it that way, but sometimes I have to take off my clothes to try on the new clothes. I would rather sew than take the time to redress. It's a good thing I have a room with a door I can close!
Okay...I feel better. Now lets hear some of yours.

Well Teddie, I have few and have been sewing for only a few years. lol
1. Starting way to many projects at once. lol For me I get new ideas all the time and I have to try them out so I end up have 100 projects going. lol
2. Losing needles, seam rippers, thimbles, thread, etc. I always lose something but I do sometimes find it. lol
3. Sewing to fast. We have one of those old fashioned sewing machines where you have to get the speed just right with the pedal.
That is all I can think of now. lol I might think of more later. Hugs, Channah

Mis-judging how much fabric I will need and then running out. I always go one stitch too close to the end of the fabric, then when I backstitch the fabric puckers. Those are my two big ones Teddy - I am laughing at the thought of you sewing in your underwear, and picturing the look on my son's face if he walked into the laundry room/pantry room/sewing room and found me attired in a similar fashion. I am super bad at having way too many irons in the fire and I never backstitch anything. Anytime I teach someone to sew I ALWAYS teach them to backstitch becasue once it becomes habbit, it's easy. Breaking the habit of NOT doing it is tough!

My worst habit is not finishing things if they don't fit. If I make something and it is to little I just don't finish it. I have project stuck everywhere that are partly done. I also buy patterns whenever they are on sale. It is like I can't help myself. I have dozens of patterns that I bought at .99 cents because they are on sale and I "might" use them. I am also a fabric collector. I have tons that i don't know what I am going to use it for.

After about thirty years of sewing my bad habits are: Too many projects on the go at once. Too much fabric and although I planned to use it for a specific item by the time I finish my many projects that are on the go I forget what I was planning. Craziness. Lastly, I don't always iron the projects as I go even though I know they turn out better when I do.
Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do! |

LOL ALL of the above.
I always loose the seam ripper and then have to use a scissor too. I hardly ever iron in between. TOO much fabric, too many things going at once.
I DO always backstitch though ( a good habit)

LOL! Can you see all of us together in a large sewing room with all of our "habits" in play??? For me my worst habit that I am determined to break this year ( a new year's resolution too!) is to not hold pins in my mouth!! Done it for as long as I can remember. . then last December I got one caught in my mouth . . . a scary moment for sure.
I did eliminate the loosing of the scissors, seam ripper etc by placing a cup at each sewing machine and placing one of everything in it. . . now I loose my tailors chalk and small ruler daily instead
I too collect patterns, fabric and have unfinished projects in various stages (for myself). . . getting better at finishing these but need to improve. . . however, the collecting of patterns and fabric are a bad habit I am willing to live with for the rest of my life!! LOL!!

I giggled at this one... funny to see what we all do. Here's mine: rushing to cut, then making a cutting mistake. Not finishing a project and into the drawer it goes, not improving. In ten years of owning a sewing machine, I am still "a beginner". I don't think I got the sewing gene from my mom and grandma. I guess I need lessons....

Thanks for the confessions. This has been fun. I was on another site and saw where a woman said she had SABLE.... it was Stash Accumulating Beyand Life Expectancy LOL I guess we all seem to have SABLE. I never did the pins in the mouth thing. My Grandma ( who was a wonderful seamstress) always had straight pins on her dress pinned up near her shoulder. It was an experience to hug her! You always winced just waiting to get stuck.:-p

Wow. I have share some these habits as well. Pins in the mouth. Cutting thread with my teeth (eww, gross I know. Just for craft projects destined for my house and the wash...) Not pressing before I start or in between. Not sewing on scraps enough after oiling the machine...it always seems to save just one big drop for a nice noticeable spot and then lets loose. Coffee cups on the sewing table.
Prayer costs nothing, but is worth the most. |

This is such a fun topic....I always drop my scissors or leave them on the cutting table and have to get up to get them. I am not the best at cutting on the pattern line, sometimes a little more or less here or there. i've had porceline head pin cushions started for the women in my family for 3 years and haven't finished them, maybe for Christmas? i do put pins in my mouth. i cannot decide on what kind of pincushion i like, i've sewn for years. My mother's sewing was a beautiful on the inside as it was on the outside. i did not inherit that trait!!! LOL and thanks for the session!!!!

OH yes those pins in the mouth, another bad habit. Mom was always mad when she saw me doing that (she used to do it too though, hehe, bad example

| Now I know I'm not alone!! My scissors sprout legs and run away while I am sewing, sometimes they kidnap my pin cushion and take that with them! I have about 5 different projects on my table at the moment. I too have a SABLE! I also collect and hoard vintage patterns. I can go on and on and on...... |

I love this--makes me feel like I'm not the only one with bad habits. I do not change the needle on my machine, I never give the poor machine maintenance, I have too many projects going at one time. But at least I'm not the only one. ha

Glad to see I am not alone in the world! I have too many plans and too much stuff. My biggest fault is that I never throw anything (clothing) away because I MIGHT use it for something else.
I have been wanting to sit and sew for a month now. Still wanting. Not sitting though. LOL! And there is nothing stopping me. That has got to be my very worst habit.
I am a poor self-starter.

Hi Teddie, I have been sewing for about 35 years and I have lots of bad habits. My number one is having too many projects at one time. I am supposed to make my granddaughter an Easter dress but I have several embroidery projects going also. I have got to put them down and get started on her dress. I can't sew in my underwear because my studio has a lot of windows and doors. Uh, no privacy. LOL I also use any thing to rip a seam out; whatever is nearby. I am guilty of not removing my pins, sometimes. Ohhhh the broken needles. I try to change my needles every time, but I have been known to use the same one until it breaks. I guess my work would look better if I would change it. On the good side, I have made it a habit to press my seams as I go. I also wanted to let you know we live close to each other. Happy sewing! I don't finish my projects before I start on others...I am a terrible project hopper. I leave needles stuck in thread spools and I'm forgetful, half blind and put down needle and can't recall where I left them...Drew is always finding my stray needles =P

I have sewn in my underwear many times! Sometimes just to cool off after a hot flash. I have been known to get so frustrated I'd throw the whole thing away before I wore it. I just run around in my undies hoping nobody comes to the door or looks closely in the windows.
I leave needles and pins stuck in thread spools, stuck on the couch, on a calender, and in a bulletin board. Let's see, what else. I leave a jar of buttons and a jar of yoyos on my coffee table and sometimes a pin keep. Oh, gosh now I am sounding like such a slob!

I can relate to all of this. I am so guilty of doing pretty much everything you all have mentioned, except for the backstitching that is something I always do. I do love to sew, though. Wouldn't it be great if we could all get together and work on our projects? What fun that would be.

I laughed OUT LOUD at some of these posts! It's good to know we're not alone. My worst habit is trying to sew without my glasses on. I need them just for close work and if I don't have them hanging around my neck I try to sew without them on (I hate pulling them on and off!). My other bad habit is saying I'm making something for someone else and then not being able to part with it. But really, how much does one Farmgirl need? Dianne

Don't know how I forgot this bad habit, but I HATE to mend anything! My family calls my mending pile "the black hole" and warn one another never to put anything there because you'll never see it again. Anyone else dislike mending as much as I do? Dianne

Dianne, I dispise mending! I like constructing from the beginning. I also do not like doing alterations on a ready-made.
Marcy, It would be great to get together to sew! I don't have any sewing friends nearby. So glad I have you guys!
Linda, Woo Hoo!!! another underwear sew-er. I try not to run around the house this way,but it has happened. In warmer weather I usually "dress" to sew. As in a robe or loose dress so I can pull things off and on. In the winter I start out with the delusion that I won't disrobe then just end up FREEZING. LOL
Since we are also listing things we do well. I guess my categories are 1. I always backstitching 2 I always iron seams open. I can't sew without my iron! As a matter of fact the sewing machine and iron are at right angles to each other. I just turn my chair to iron a seam.

Mine is defiantly not changing the bobbin if I can get away with the color. And for some reason I don't like to wind bobbins unless I have too! I'm getting better about pressing [when I get it together and plug the iron in.] Lazy I guess... Smiles! Carla
