Peggy - here's hoping your garden dries out soon.

Kris - here's hoping your garden gets a bit wet! I got the greenhouse at Fred Meyer (supermarket - it's a chain that's owned by Kroger).

I think I'll get my beets planted today.

And it's raining! A steady sprinkly rain. And we need it.

I love beets. I planted Bull's Blood beets. I have some heirloom Detroit Red I will plant later. I planted 4 rows with 2 planted close together. The red leaves are so pretty and really add nice color to the garden.

Hi Kris, we are having a great gentle rain today! and very cool temps!!! My butternut squash is up, sunflowers are up - haven't seen carrots yet! My daddy LOVED beet greens - have you ever tried them? You should eat them when they are young and tender.
DH hates them, said they are not fit for human consumption!

It is supposed to rain here this week. My garden is ready for it...well at least the one that actually still has growing things in it (the flower garden)

I am not sure how I feel possibly risking more tomato plants to certain death and I am still waiting for some more seeds to come up... Hmmm....

I know these gardens do so much better when it rains than I can do watering them. So I am all for the rain. It didn't do too much here though. But enough to go down a little. Anything helps. But then the weeds love it even more. And they grow faster than the veggies. Wonder why that is?

My sunflowers that I planted when I planted the tomatoes are growing fast though. They are almost as tall already as the tomatoes. So they might work for staking after all. I did find a bag of green wooden stakes at Ace for just about $5. Not too bad. And I need alot of them. I have alot of the Beef Steak gorwing in pots now that will need planting in about a month for later tomatoes. And some more heirlooms I got from Dawn. So I will have another row soon. And I need to plant more corn.

Alee, sounds like you might need to wait a while longer to plant anything with the weather the way it is there. ALl the up and down temps would be so confusing to a plant. It's bad enough for us. Maybe after Memorial day.

Ruth, I am trying scallop squash this year. I've only ever grown straight and crookneck squash. And it's coming up too! I have seen people at the market selling it and it does sell good there. I hope you got enough rain to do some good in your garden.

I have been a little depressed about all our things tearing up and not working and not being able to get things going. And then I just want to give it all up and put the goats out in the gardens and let them have it all. It's very depressing to me to have a husband that is gone and only gets to come home about every other weekend. Then when he's home he's tired or gone on motorcycle rides with friends all day and there is just so much that needs to be done and I need help around here. So it's a little discouraging to me.

But a few days ago I was looking in the Bible and looked under advice in the back. I turned to 2nd Corinthians 8: 10-12: And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and what you were desiring to do a year ago: but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it , so there also may be a completion of what you have. For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what one does not have.

Well, this really hit me hard. I do have a desire to have these gardens and provide fresh healthy food not only to my family but to the community. And it's not about what I DON'T have but what I HAVE. Which is my health and a strong body to do work like it was meant to be done, by hand. So if I cannot get things started to help make things easy for me, I will have to get out there with a hoe and get to work with what God has given me. He will have to put that desire in me because right now I am thinking that's a huge garden and lots of weeds!

So I am saying this for me. I need to realize what I do have and stop whinning about what I don't have. I am grateful for all God has given me and my family.

oh kris, i am so sorry you are feeling down. i am familiar with your feelings. it can feel so overwhelming and lonely at times. when papa works out of town i get a glimpse of how it would be for you.sometimes giving up sounds good to me too. the thing is on a good day i ask myself what was i thinking? i sure wish we were closer. i would help you and keep you busy. tools are my best friend when papa is gone. i know your tiller has been a problem lately.are there any kids or another girl around your place that might trade for food? i ask an egg customer if she wanted to trade. it has worked out good so far.i think if i were you i would weed it and put down a ton of news papers between the rows and put grass clippings on top of the newspaper or straw. i dont even weed first. i water weed wack if i can and down with the paper. then i only have to do the row itself.
i so hope you feel better soon. i hate when i feel down. i will pray for the peace of God to come over you.hang in there my friend this too shall pass. sending love and prayers to lift your spirit up.we all have these days.the difference between a winner and not is we go on and get done what needs done. i will carry you in my heart today. happy days sherrye

{{Kris}} My hubby is a teacher, and he is the video-productions guy, so the last couple of weeks of school (that would be right now, here!) he is super busy taping all the concerts and awards ceremonies, and graduation...and making a graduation DVD (with highlights from the year) to fill orders...the kids forget what he looks like. And then, when he is home, he's tired or off on some project that is not what I think is the highest priority.

Thanks for that scripture reference - I think I need it, too!

Peace to you,
Melissa

Thanks, Sherrye and Melissa. It is hard but it's the way things are. I really needed to see that too. I just thought it fit me so much right now. Isn't it wierd how you can read something once and then again a long time later and it means something totally different? I guess we all go through so many different emotions and it's all there for us at the time we need it. And sometimes I just feel sorry for myself.

Hi Kris, Just read your post - I'm sorry for what you are going through! It's not easy trying to do most everything yourself, then mechanical problems on top of all that! YIKES! overwhelming!
The scripture was great! It never ceases to amaze me how the Lord speaks to us right where we are! You can see the same scripture time and time again, then it just sort of hits me between the eyes! God knows and He cares for you, and so do your farm girl sisters! Will keep you in my heart and prayers! Would love to come and give you a BIG hug!

How are you doing today, Kris? Hang in there!

22 sunflower seedlings yesterday!! Of course, I wasn't feeling well last night and went to bed before closing up the greenhouse...we'll see how many I have today, LOL.

Planted beet seeds yesterday, finally. Anyone ever try the variety, "Cylindra"? They look sorta like fat red carrots. (on the package, anyway)

My daughter graduates from kindergarten today! How did that happen? This is what I wrote at the start of the school year - it goes double for now:

Oh my goodness! She is adorable! How's she already graduating this fast? I just had my youngest graduate college last Sat. It's hard to belive she's 29 years old. But it happens so fast. Don't blink!

I hope your sunflowers made it. And I hope you are feeling better this morning. I have not heard of that kind of beet. I plant Bull's Blood and Detroit Red.

I had a miracle happen this morning! Well, two of them. Our truck has not bees cranking lately and we have to charge it up. We have a truck load of trash that needs to go to the dump. And my friend called this morning and she's baling hay this afternoon. And it's going to rain tomorrow. So I went out there awhile ago and it cranked right up! Now I just hope it will when I get ready to go.

Then I have not been able to crank my little black tiller this year yet. I left it out all winter. Bad me. Hubby has worked a little on it. And put it up under the table with a tarp over it. And the big tiller is broken. So I went out there awhile ago and checked the gas and oil. It needed oil. So I put some in. Put the choke on and pumped the gas bubble thing. And it cranked ON THE FIRST PULL!!! Now that is a miracle! And to have both those things work is just amazing. So I got the smaller garden tilled around all the plants. It's hotter than fire already out there. And then I have to load hay when it's going to be 90 today. Why do we have to get hay when it's so darn hot anyway? Why can't it be in the 70's? But it's the best hay and the only hay my picky spoiled goats will eat. SO I gotta go get it. And my friend lets me store it in her barn too. And she got it all cleaned out and ready for me. Now that's a friend. I love her.

Ihope ya'll have a great day. And a dry one. Some of you are getting lots of rain.

No, I did not get that bench. When I went back it was gone. But it's still on sale for $49. and they could order more. But I guess I'll look on Craig's list or yard sales. Or ask for one for my birthday. And yes, it feels great to actually do something myself. Hubby's coming home tonight for the weekend so he will be getting parts for the Troy tiller tomorrow and work on it. But the truck's parked over by the camper out of the way and it's empty. I went to the dump first then got 80 bales of hay. ALl in a days work around here! I took a shower and feel pretty good right now. But I have to go get my hubby soon.

Have you worked out in the yard any today? Or is it still wet there? I think we have a 50/50 chance of rain tomorrow. let it rain. We need it.

Hi Kris, I did work in the yard this morning, planting the last rose and some other flowers. Came in about 11:30 - too hot out there for me. I don't do HOT! Went back out later today and planted some more flowers in the yard and some on the front porch. Also cleaned the pollen (UGH) off the front porch one more time! Scrubbed some of the porch railing, it was yucky. Looks better now! Still have some more flowers to plant, hopefully will get it done early in the morning. It looks like we might have quite a bit or rain coming, then I'll work inside the house. Need to get some sewing done, which I enjoy!
Fannin County High School has some nice wood benches for $40 or $45, don't think you could make one for that price. Very hefty wood.
Hugs,
Ruth

Sherrye, you should have seen my friend from up the road. he was there helping our old preacher with his hay. He came over and started tossing hay up to Abby like it was a feather. Just tossing it up and she had it stacked about 4 high by then. I love to see guys tossing hay up like it's nothing. And here i was huffing and puffing. And he's older than me. But yeah, I am pooped. That shower felt so good.

I am glad you got some work done outside today. I don't like it too hot either. I usually go out in the morning then come in and go back out about 6:30. I wish I lived closer to see those benches. I bet they are pretty. I wonder if our high school is making any. There are 2 and they both have greenhouses.

I had a close call today. I had to go get hubby tonight. All the goats were up front when I left. When we got home it was dark and I didn't see or hear them. They had all gotten out through a bad section of the fence my DD tore up and all were in the back pasture. I had left that gate open. And they didn't eat a thing on the way back there. They had to walk all the way through the yard to get out back. I am amazed at them. But all the work I did to get them up front. I don't think they like it there.

Hi Kris, Just checking in to see how you are doing? Hope you and hubby are able to have some time together while he is home.
Glad the goaties didn't eat your garden all up! Oh my goodness - that would not have been good! Glad you get them that good hay to keep them happy!

Yppee, Melissa! That's so fun. It's probably the perfect weather there for peas. Right now it's 90 something and my poor peas are not happy. It's too hot!

Yep, hubby's here and so id Kansas, the youngest grand. Then my parents are back up to sign papers on their new house. Then they'll be here for the weekend. They had bought a bedroom set and little dining room table and chairs but they can't be delivered now til next Wed. So they'll have to stay here in their "cabin". They have a camper here they have been using for the past year now when they come up. So now they can stay in their own house! And I will go to their house to eat! Yay!

I am going to til the big garden in a little while when the sun goes down over the trees. Hubby got the big tiller fixed for me. What a guy! I just finished mowing the yard and around the garden. It looks so good when it's mowed. We are supposed to get some storms later so i want it all done today.

Well, I did get most of the big garden tilled Friday. Then I think I messed it up again. After hubby got parts to fix it. I am horribly hard on machinery here. But I think I am going to have to replant alot out there. It's time to anyway. And I got all of the other garden tilled. Now I need to put more manure and straw on the rows. And the popcorn didn't come up. Also the 2 different peas I got last year, only a few came up. Other than that it's all up over there. But my corn is only about 5" tall. I keep looking across the road at the corn they planted a few weeks ago and it's almost 3' tall. And very full and so green. My looks anemic compared to that.

It's raining! It was supposed to have rained days ago. But I'll take it. I have to drive my hubby back to his truck in Jasper, Tn this afternoon. I want to go vist a goat I sold to a girl over there. She was due last week to kid and I want to see her babies, She is a half Togg. half Lamancha and she was bred to a Sannan buck. Should be interesting and cute kids.

I hope ya'll have a great Sunday.

Sherrye, I'm working on a quilt for my granddaughter - she sewed the blocks together, I'm putting the blocks together. NOW, I need to cut out more blocks because it's not full bed size. Have the borders cut, just need more blocks. Doing it in chocolate brown and turquoise, going to be very pretty! She is 17 and loves to sew, so it has been fun working together on this project. I have other projects in the works too! Made a pillowcase for a little guy, it had fire trucks on it. I enjoy sewing!
Thanks for asking!

Kris, I'm missing your posts! Know hubby is home and your parents are there and that you must be VERY busy! It's thundering here at the moment, not raining yet, but it's a coming!

Ruth, I love quilting. I have made about 10. I made a pretty blue and white baby quilt for my great nephew in Colorado. It turned out so cute, like sailboats. It's neat that your GD likes to sew. Mine like to help me. I have started teaching them to embroider. That's funny to see them all concentrating on getting the needle in the right place.

I just took my hubby back to his truck. He had to park about 50 miles from here. And it rained just about the whole way there and back. It's still raining here too. We sure need some. But now I have to get my goats from the front to the milk room across the yard in the rain. They will not like this. They are all huddled in the goat sheds now. And they are FULL of milk. So my hands will be hurting soon.

My parents left this morning. They bought a house up here and just signed the papers Friday. It's there's now! So they will come up probably every other weekend til the end of the year or next March when mom will retire. Again. I have to go Wed. to meet furniture deliveries for them.

Have a good day, ya'll! I am tired. I will go to bed early tonight and work in the gardens tomorrow.

Kris
