Yeah, PeggyAnn! I am so glad everything made it. That's good news. I hope everyone elses did too. We had some pretty bad storms around here last night. We finally got the rain we needed badly. Just rained a nice rain all night with the thunder and lightening of course. Whenever it comes up from Alabama I get a little more worried. That's where the bad storms come from and that's where they came from last night. It's supposed to rain all day today.

But that's ok because I worked outside all day yesterday and did all I wanted to do. So it can rain now. I mowed. I hung out 2 laods of clothes. I tilled both gardens and mulched several more rows in the smaller one and planted another row of squash. In the bigger garden I got the HK corn planted til I ran out. I still have room for about 6 more rows of something. Also replanted what didn't come up before. So it's all done again for now.

And boy, does it feel good to jump in the shower and get clean after a day like that! I was filty and stankin. I had dirt in every crevice on me. But it's a good kind of dirty and I feel like I actually worked. It really feels good to get out there and see progress. It looks good and nice and neat right now. But eveything's only about 6" tall right now. Well, except the tomatoes and the sunflowers. I will have to get them all staked next. And I still have lots of mulching to do. But I did make progress yesterday. So I can relax and have a nice weekend.

My 7 year old grand, Kansas, is having her little program this morning then school's out for her. Then tonight I go get the other 2 grands, Chloe and Coryn, and they will spend the night tonight. My parents are back up and in their NEW HOUSE!!! They'll be coming up probably now every other weekend. But they can stay in their new house now! Yay! And I won't see them as much now that they are over there. Which is fime.

So I hope everyone has a great day today and a better weekend.

Kris

Hey Sherrye. My DD got off early today and so I didn't get the kids. They were all going somewhere tonight. So maybe next time. I am glad your hubby is getting some good work now. Are you still thinking about moving? We got some good rain last night and some today. It really soaked into the ground good. I am so glad we don't get much snow here in the spring. I hope this weekend is better for ya'll.

I went to K-Mart today looking at their plants. lots of sales. I found sweet potaotes. So I got 2 cups with 9 plants. I have to wait now til the ground dries up to plant them. I've been looking on line at videos on how to plant them. I've never done this before. They sure take up alot of room. I have a spot for them that will be just right.

I also got 2 1/2 cups of hot peppers and 2 cups of Celebrity tomatos. And more crowder peas, beets and zucchini seeds. So I will need to til some more rows for these. It's looking good out there. Now if I can keep the tiller working all summer I'll be doing good.

My nasturtiums are going like gangbusters, all of a sudden. Yea! I hope the weather stays nice until it's safe to plant them.

Peas, carrots, beets, and lettuce are all doing well (though I need to thin the carrots and beets), and the sunflowers are taking off.

Got some tomato plants the other day - tomatoes are tricky here without a real greenhouse, so I only got 6 plants. 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 "Siberia" variety, and 2 "Sub-Arctic" variety, both of which are beefsteak, I think. Once I get the bed ready for them (and June 1st rolls around - that's our frost-free date), we'll see what does well this year.

Here are pictures of my favorite sprouts. :-)

Ah, those would be my favorite sprouts too! They are so cute. I bet they will be really good helpers too. I have some Beefsteak tomatoes I started from seeds that are doing great. They are all about 2' tall now.

Thanks, Kris and Sherrye! I didn't really have a good, garden-related reason to stick those pictures here, but I just uploaded them and couldn't resist. Just gave Boy that hair cut yesterday, and he looks SO much like pics of my father at that age!

Ok, I'll get back to gardening in my next post! :-)

i have to say yesterday was an adventure for gardens for sure. i went to a plant sale. it was our local garden society. 8 gals under one little tent. well here i was knowing i am moving, shopping for PLANTS>lol well i bought for myself and a friend. she gave me money to spend. how fun is that? so i am boxing up good stuff. here comes a black cloud. oh man hail hard for 15 minutes.beat their tomatoes and plants to death. they stood and watched the pansies go down. we were all hovered under the little tent in disbelief. even for here this is not a good thing. i spent 69. dollars of hers. had a blast and some good laughs there.when i was getting in my car to leave some kids came by. they were going fast in their car. well i got a snow rain hail bath allover me. just soaked. i did call them butt heads. no one heard me. well anyway went got hay and came on home. so we froze out there last night . i think 21 degrees. plants are in woodstove room. i am so over this winter stuff. the weather however is not over yet. i shall play in the greenhouse. we have rain and snow forecast. happy days sherrye

Sherrye, sounds like you had an adventure. I am glad nothing happened to you. And that would make me mad if someone came along and splashed me. Stupid kids.

Well, I got my grape vines planted just now. I went ahead and put them in the garden. They'll get more sun there and be out of the way. I need about 4 more. And I got 2 thornless blackberry plants so stuck them in the row too. Then I pulled weeds and mulched a little more. I had to cut off some of the sunflower leaves that are in with the tomatoes. I should not have planted them so close together. But the tomatoes look really good. And there are some little tomatoes already on the orange cherry bushes! I must say my smaller garden in looking really good. Still alot of work to be done. That never stops. And I still have to plant the peppers and more tomatoes and sweet potatoes, peas, okra, zucchini and beets. But I will have to wait til it dries out some out there.

I hope ya'll had a good day. I am tired. It's been a long day for me. Got up at 6 this morning and have been going ever since. I am soaking my poor toe.

Sherrye -

You have been getting hit hard on your side of the mountains, here in the valley (on the other side) we have had hard rain and hail all week long and it is unusually cold. I hope it warms up a bit soon - I could do with a bit of warmer weather. The rain is fine, just too cold right now.

Ya'll sure have my sympathy. We had so much rain here last spring I thought I'd have to build an ark too. It was very depressing. Especially since I wanted to be out in the garden so bad. But it finally stopped and then we had a drought. So it went from one extreme to another real fast.

We had rain a few days ago and I tried to til Sat. but it was too wet. I am impatient. I am going to go out this afternoon and til some more rows so I can get the sweet potatoes planted in the big garden. Plus 3 rows of okra, another row of crowder peas. Then in the other garden I need to plant more tomatoes, zucchini, beets and peppers. That should be all for awhile. Then I wait for it all to start producing.

My peas are finally blooming. They have been traveling up the fence and have had a few flowers. So I am waiting to see if they will make peas. Oh, there is so much to do out there still. I need to mulch the potatoes too.

I hope ya'll have a good garden day. And Anne and PeggyAnn, I hope ya'll dry up enough to get out in your gardens too.

I got 2 rows of okra, 2 rows of crowder pear, 1 row of zucchini and 18 sweet potato plants in the big garden today. So it is all done for awhile. I saw some peas poking up that I planted last week!

In the other garden I planted 25 more tomatoes, 12 peppers. And mulched some more. And tilled some more. It's reallt looking good out there so far. I am rather pleased with everything. I just hope that everything produces not. And the chickens stay out. And the goats don't escape and eat it all. They are all up front right next to the big garden. I have barbed wire doubled on the top of the fence row. It was thundering a little as I was finishing up. Maybe we'll get some rain now.

I sure hope ya'll are able to work in your gardens. It is so good to be able to get out there and work. I am filthy but I like this dirty. I know it's from some hard work.

Wow, 25 more tomatoes! I have 6. And my DH thinks that's a lot. LOL. When he was growing up on a farm, the only thing he thought tomatoes were any good for was throwing them at his sister.

And I just went and got 2 more cups of the sweet potatoes to finish out the row. I hate uneven rows and uneven numbers. It's a curse. I also found some of the little sweet peppers that are so good I can eat them like candy. I was so excited to find them. And a cup of hot peppers for hubby and mom. Now I have to go outside after awhile and plant some more. I thought I was done.

I went by my DD's and looked at her gardens. They cheated and bought mostly plants. So they have little baby squash already! I am so jealous. But she is doing such a good job with it. I am very proud of her.

Melissa, that's so funny. Does he not eat tomatoes at all? I don't really eat the alot but those first few are the best ever.

Sherry, I was gone most of the day and I was worried the whole time. But when I got home they were all still in the pasture.

Peggy - Thanks! Yes they are growing like weeds - and the Boy is a more aggressive weed than the Girl. He's 2 years younger and only 3" shorter. And he weighs more, by 1 ounce. (Just had check ups yesterday - so I've got all the most up-to-date info, LOL)

Kris - DH will eat tomatoes, as long as they are pureed. If they are in pieces, he prefers them big enough to pick out. It's fun explaining to the kids that Daddy is allowed to shove part of his food to the side, but they aren't.

I put the hanging baskets up yesterday. Makes it really look like summer, even if there's not much growing in the flower beds yet.

Gotta get the beans planted, finally (1 week before frost free date, it says on the package - I'm pushing it a tiny bit, but it was nearly 80F yesterday, and I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE!!! LOL).

Oh, and I have to get the bed ready for my sad little collection of tomatoes. I haven't successfully grown tomatoes, yet, but this year I've got the species "Sub-Arctic" and "Siberia" - I'm hoping those'll work well in my conditions. They are both bred for long days and cool temps, so we'll see.

Sherry, I saw your post on the snow storm there. I hope you are holding on tight! Gosh I think I would just go crazy if that happened here. As I was leaving this afternoon to go to town I could see really black clouds over Chatt. The closer I got it started raining then it got a little brighter. Got to my friend's house to deliver eggs and it was just sprinkling. Then got to my DD's house and it was done but her squash were turned sideways and there was an old tree that fell on an empty house. SO there was lot of wind there. When I got home it was a little wet but not much. It looked like it was heading east which is weird.

Melissa, you have been busy. And I have heard of those tomatoes too. They would probably NOT do good here. But you will have good luck with them. I can't wait to get that first fresh tomato. I have a feeling those darn chickens will get one first though. I have had to chase them out several times so far. Early in the morning then in the evening.

Tonight I cut off a bunch of the huge sunflower leaves that were dwarfing the tomatoes. I just read where someone suggested doing this same thing and feeding the leaves to the goats. So I did and they loved them. But I had a 5 gallon bucket full and didn't want them to get sick on them so I will save the rest for tomorrow. I hope it doesn't change the flavor of the milk. I hope it helps the tomatoes grow better. But some of them have flowers on them! And some of the heirloom orange cherry plants have little tomatoes on them. So we just might get a ripe tomato by July 4th this year.

I also planted the 4 grape vines to the side of the smaller garden. That's where they will be out of the way and get the most sun. I need about 4 more to fill in the row. I dug the holes for the posts tonight too. Man, that is some kind of hard work! Using those post hole diggers is brutal on the arms and back. I had to do 5 holes about a foot deep. Where's a man when I need one? Never around, that's for sure!

Hey Sherry. Are you buried in snow?

Sherry, not today either. And we need rain so bad. It's thundering all around us and rained in Flintstone but dry as a bone out here. There are dark ominous looking clouds but nothing yet. Me and Kansas were outside doing rain cheers and rain dances. She's still doing it. It's nice out under the shade trees.

My strawberries are about done now. Isn't that wierd?
