I just wanted to say hello. I live in the big city of Amarillo, TX.
I spent most of my life in Seattle where they were about 20yrs ahead of Amarillo in the going green revolution. The were into recycling, water and energy conservation long before this part of TX. When I go home to visit my sister and her family make me envious with there composting and growing of flowers and vegetables. Even though I live in the heart of the city I want to Compost and have my own vegetable and herb gardens. I would like to have a rabbit and some chickens but I dont think they are allowed in the city limits. I hope to find info on composting and starting a first garden on here. I did a farmgirl group check and I was so excited to find out that Amarillo has a chapter so I have already contacted them and am anxiously awaiting there reply.

The city is where I love but I will always be a farmgirl in my heart!

I know right where Chahellis is. I know I spelled it wrong. I was supposed to be going home in June but it has been cancelled till next year. I am pretty bummed about it. It has been 4 yrs since my last visit and I am getting pretty homesick. Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome Barbara!

I got to visit Seattle once - it was beautiful. I would love to live there. I spent my early childhood in Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay Area, and honestly, I would move back there in a heartbeat if I could afford to do it. I would love to live in a place where I fit in, and where people thought I was normal for bringing my own shopping bags and recycling and eating organic food and so forth, instead of looking at me like I've got two heads and just landed from another planet. And I hear you about moving to a place that's 20 years behind where you came from - that's kind of how I felt about the East Coast when I first got here (and in fact, come to think of it, that's not far off - Maryland now resembles the West Coast 17 years ago, around the time I moved from Alaska to Maryland, in terms of things like eco-awareness, recycling, bringing shopping bags, availability of decent coffee, etc.

You could probably get away with the rabbit, because lots of people keep rabbits as pets. There are lots of towns and cities where you can legally keep small henhouses, so you might very well be able to have a couple of chickens as well. It's definitely worth checking out. And if all else fails, you can definitely have a garden and compost, and you might even be able to keep bees (again, though, you'll have to check your local ordinances - every town is different). In any case, good luck with your garden! I am trying to get a garden going this year as well, after a several-year hiatus. I've decided to try square foot gardening, since my husband was going to make me raised beds anyway, and since it is supposed to be less work than traditional gardening. My oldest son is not interested in gardens, but fortunately, his younger brother is enthusiastic about gardening. I've promised him he can have his own 3x3 square foot garden to grow whatever he wants, and he's really psyched. :-) So here's to happy, healthy gardens for everyone!

Hello Barbara! I moved from Northern California to the Los Angeles area over 20 years ago, and it was a culture shock! People gave me looks when I'd pull out my own bags for produce and groceries. My neighbors would be hosing off their driveways and I would be sweeping mine!
I've been to Seattle several times. It is so beautiful up there. I've been to a few areas of Texas too, so I can imagine how different it is for you. Find out what you can do in your area and become a shining example of a simpler way of life!
Glad to have you here with us.

Hi Barbara,
Welcome from MN.
Check local ordinances about rabbits and chickens, it can vary from place to place. I just read recently about an organization that helps with changing regulations so chickens can be raised in towns .If you want to keep rabbits in cages indoors it just depends if you are renting or not and if you are, the landlord could say no. If you want cages outdoors if will be a lot more obvious to neighbors who might complain so you will have to check. We have a local ordinance in a neighboring town about keeping bees, neighbors have to be notified and can object.
There are relatively odorless compost possiblities, again that can make a difference with neighbors. I don't know about gardening regulations, in some places if a vegetable garden is in the front yard people can complain, but being more "ornamental" you could more likely get an herb garden going, especially if some flowers are mixed in.
Best wishes!
Susan

Hi and welcome. I, too, am a new Farmgirl on line but have been a farmgirl at heart since my growing up years in Minnesota. I am now in Nevada and am learning how to get things to grow in this climate. Husband built a "buckboard" raised garden for me last year and I had some luck in raising tomatoes, and hot peppers. I have had a compost area for years and love seeing the finished product. I have two grown children with teenagers of their own. Are there any other Farmgirls here in Nevada, I am also close to Norther California, so am looking for a connection here. Good to have all you all here.

Welcome Barbara - I grew up in the Seattle area, it still feels like home even though it doesn't much resemble the city I remember. Hope you enjoy the forum!!

Hi Barbara from NE Ohio. A BIG Sisterly hug to ya so you don't feel so homesick. Really glad you joined us. I want chickens too, but even our small town frowns on it. I'm not giving up tho. It's not like I want a coop full of Roo's, I just want about 6 henny-penny's lol
