Hello!
I wanted to drop a line and let everyone know that I'll be teaching a beginner's beekeeping course via the radio show, along with visuals on MAY 9th!
As some of you may or may not know, I'm a third generation beekeeper. The online course on the 9th covers all you need to know about your first year of beekeeping including:
*Basic bee social structure, and various races/breeds of bees you can choose from * Basic components of the Langstroth (box) hives, which are most commonly used in beekeeping in the US. * Basic bee management, including disease/pest management, and natural beekeeping. * Bee diseases and what to look for. *General care of your bees for the first year, and overwintering your bees!
For more info, please see here: http://therenegadefarmer.com/?p=939 /b " target="_blank"> b http://therenegadefarmer.com/?p=939 /b
Thank you!

Zan, I hope I put a stamp on that envelope! I didn't see it back in my box yesterday so maybe I did. I am excited about this class. I have never taken an on line class before. It should be fun. I want bee hives so bad.

Sounds fun! I'll have to ask my husband. Just a quick question before I take a class for something that I cannot even afford to do (LOL), about how much does it cost to start up bee keeping? I've been interested for a while, because I don't know any really local be keepers and would like to have my own fresh honey for our family, but I don't know the start up costs to even get into it.

Hi Siobhan...hmm, this sort of depends on whether you want to build your own hives or buy them. It becomes exponentially more expensive if you buy the parts from beekeeping supply companies. There are several. Even then, they are somewhat cheaper if you buy them unpainted, and where you have to put the frames together.
Several bee companies sell beehives, beehive parts: dadant.com brushymountainbeefarm.com betterbee.com
These are three that I've known and worked with. Good stuff. One hive with a honey chamber can cost anywhere from $55 - $250 depending on the company and how much you need to put these together.
HOWEVER, having said that, you can also BUILD your own hive, and there are plenty of plans that are online used to build hives, which will probably dramatically save you money. Here is one I like: http://www.beesource.com/build-it-yourself/ (click on the left hand side column for each plan).
Then it depends on medicating bees..however, there are many beekeepers, such as myself, that rarely medicate the bees, and thus you don't have to spend any money. The bees are extremely smart creatures and are hardy, so really it is the cost of start up.
Finally, there is the beesuit, hive tool and smoker. Again, there is usually a "start up kit" with each company, and a hive, along with hive tool, smoker, etc comes in the kit. About 100 - $200. I find that suits run from 30 - over $100 and I got mine for $50.
Hope this helps!
