I planted some toms in one of those Topsy Turvy planters and the poor things are covered with black spots. They were fine when I planted them last weekend but now they look horrid. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

i wanted to post more but ran out of time. if it is on fruit then it may be blossom end rot. it happens when the calcium in the soil is bound up. there is a calcium treatment for it. if its the leaves we need more details. top of leaf underneath? round spot does the black spot go all the way through the leaf? do you have holes in leaf? just thinking for ya sherrye
I thought black spot was caused by a fungus in the soil and soil splashing up into the plant and if you have a topsy turvy planter, the soil can leach out. I tried my topsy turvy 2 years in a row with no success of getting much of anything. Not gonna bother with it anymore.

yes if the spots are on the leaves you are right. if on tomato might be blossom end rot. cal deficiency. i think topsy turveys are good if there is a good water supply. i think here in our desert if not shaded the plant would bake in it. just a thought sherrye
Blossom end rot can also be caused by over and under watering. Tomatoes in containers need a steady supply of water daily. Try to water them at the same time every day and not too late at night.

Gosh I am so sorry for not replying in my own thread. I have been so busy that I haven't even been on the board and I hugely apologize. I miss you girls so much!
The spots were on the actual leaves and I think they did go through. However, since I originally posted the question, I have since removed the plants and started over. The new plants, well, one of them anyway, seems to be doing so much better. The plant stem is actually curving upward over the bottom of the Topsy Turvy and going up. That's a good sign, isn't it? The plant stem is very sturdy and is holding up the branches which have flowers! YAY!
We also planted toms in clay pots as the starts were pretty big (too big for a Topsy Turvy) and we put cages around them. They look to be doing pretty well.
We've had a crummy Spring and beginning of summer. Pretty cloudy and wet and cold. Summers around here basically start after July 4. I saw the weather forecast for next week and it looks to be divine!
