Farmgils,
My 2 1/2 yr old Nigie doe has a severly congested left udder. It is twice the size it should be, swollen, hard and hot to the touch. She is still eating well and does not object to me washing and massaging it. When I try to "milk" the udder, I get clots, creamy and yellowish fluid but no blood or signs of pink color. When she starts stamping her foot and pulling away, I wet her udder with clean water and use rosemary/lavendar soap to work up a lather and massage her, until I get leakage from her udder, at that point, I try to "milk" her until she objects. I rinse her udder and massage in homemade salve (Peppermint spirits, tea tree oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, and beeswax), then I wash her again with the rosemary/lavendar soap, dry her off and apply a small amount of the salve to her teat opening. I started this treatment last Thursday and the swelling has gone down to half the size it was. I know that patience is the key but does any one have any suggestions for adding something to her grain to help from the inside out??he is due to kid in late July.

When you free your mind your heart can fly. Farmgirl # 714,

well she sounds like mastitus to me. be carefull keep hands clean so you do not get it in her other side. in cows we use any soft oil mixed with cayanne pepper and rub on udder to help circulation. you need to milk every few hours and work hard at getting the dead thick stuff out. hot compresses help too. you still may end up needing the today treatment for her. it is an antibiotic you put up her teat. clean is important. bedding stall wherever she is. also milking very often to help clear it out is sooo important. then at bed put the today in. it will sit in there overnight and help. just what i would be doing in your case. someone else with herb knowledge maybe can help too. heres hoping she is better soon. happy days sherrye

It might be worth your while to try rubbing some Fennel Essential Oil on
her udder to help get the flow going, too, like a few drops mixed in some
coconut or olive oil.
