Farmgirls, Do you have a favorite heirloom perennial flower? How about a favorite heirloom vegetable? (tomatoes are often mentioned).
What is it you like about the plant(s) you listed? Flavor, ease of care, sentimental reasons?
I am putting together a list of beloved heirloom plants for a presentation I will be doing later this year. I want to showcase the old fashioned plants because they are not fussy, generally drought tolerant, hardy as can be, and because they carry so many memories for most of us.
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

My favorites are our pole beans! For both sentimental and flavor. My husband’s family has been growing these beans for at least 8 generations. Probably longer, but we are not for sure who started growing them. Imagine a large green bean pod with a pinto as the actual bean. One of the best reasons for marrying into this family is the beans...lol:)

I grow mostly only heirlooms because I love the fact they are the way nature intended. No hybrid, gmo, etc. The only place I do not use only heirlooms is in the winter greenhouse. My favorite out of the 100 or so varieties of heirlooms I grow a season is Mr. Stripey tomato. I love, love, love Mr. Stripey. It is the best tasting tomato by far and I have grown over 50 different types of heirloom tomatoes through the years. Some people think heirloom tomatoes are tricky but I have had no major problems. Even with an outbreak of late blight last year I was still able to harvest tomatoes all season, although at a reduced production rate. The fact I got some tomatoes and everyone in the tri state area lost all theirs is a testament to the heirloom. I just love having heirlooms in the garden because you really can get a rainbow of colors in your vegetables. Black tomatoes, purple beans, white peppers, orange watermellon, and the tastes are just as wonderful. Jane

This is my first year for growing heirlooms, and about 95% of what's in my garden is heirlooms. I loved the peas, Mammoth, Sugar Ann, and 2 others, I can look them up if you want names. All four did well, and we are eating them every day now. No diseases, and they do better without much staking. I absolutely loved the Rocky Top Lettuce Mix! We actually have just a little bit left, and it will be gone within a couple of days. The lettuce is delicious, it was easy to plant, take care of and harvest. I loved the mix of greens. That's all we've harvested for now, it's still early here! Jane- One of the farmgirls sent me some Mr. Stripey seeds! They are doing well so far, I am really looking forward to tasting one!

I love Painted Lady and Emperor runner beans... I planted them on my front porch rails, and when I told my 84 year old (gardener) Grandma Robin, she was delighted and told me that back in her day, "ALL the ladies" had front porches covered with that beautiful, edible harvest. She may have exaggerated (grin) but seeing the profusion of flowers followed by yummy green beans right there everytime I grab the mail always reminds me of my Grandma Robin!!

Hi, My husband and I truly enjoy Black Krim tomatoes. These tomatoes have a lovely flavor and their odd purple and green coloring along with the red makes them a conversation piece when we take them to our colleagues at work. My good friend once spent three dollars on ONE Black Krim tomato the year we couldn't have a garden. She missed ours.
The plants always have droopy curled leaves that on any other tomato might indicate trouble but are merely distinctive to the Black Krim. Some people think the tomatoes are rotten or not ripe or that they are ugly, but to us the Black Krim tomatoes are beautiful and incredibly delicious. |
