Has anyone heard of these meat birds? I just did. I think I will try some. They are at www.jmhatchery.com and are only $1.50 for 50. There are different colors too. The red ones look good. Anyway, I have been thinking about what kind to get and these looked really good. I was wondering if anyone had ever raised any.

wow kris, no i havent tried them. i think i want to also. i think the guineas wood be nice for something different. i think those ducks are quackless. thanks for the link. lets keep posted on how they do. happy days sherrye thanks

Kris, that's what I want to try next. The Cornish X were so fast growing, I hated that they hardly moved from their food dishes, laid around all day, pooped- A LOT!!! To me, it was just like buying chicken from the store except that we raised them ourselves, and they had a much happier, healthier life than those in the poultry farms. Same chicken though.
I have heard that the Freedom Rangers are slower growing and more active. I don't know when I'll order them.
Yes, make sure you keep us posted on how they do, and how you like them!

sherry, yes you are right, Muscovy Ducks are quackless, great for fly control, and will bill out small rodents and eat them.
kristen, never heard of them either, but I can't free range here, they would be gone in a few days.

Brenda, do you know about how much they weigh when they are ready to butcher? They don't say how much they get to. I know about those Cornish. I raised 25 a few years back. They did grow so fast. I have been wanting to get some meat birds for awhile now. I guess now would be a good time to get them so they will be ready to butcher in Sept. or Oct. I just didn't want it to be so hot when we do butcher them.
Teresa, how do you keep so many chickens if they can't be out? That sounds like lots of work. Do you have a chicken plucker? I need to get my hubby to make one for me. I have seen them made with a drill and rubber strips. I need one. It gets the feathers off really fast.
I would like to get a few more guineas. I have seen lots of ticks here since they have been gone. But I don't want 25 of them.

Kristen, I have 3 very large coops , they all have an indoors and a very large outdoors that is also enclosed on the top, #1 coop ( it is 100 x 50) is for my meat birds, it has sectioned off areas inside, so I can rotate the differant ages with out any little one getting killed by bigger ones. #2 coop is for my layers, it has inside and outside , it is 50 x 50. #3 coop is for my turkeys, it has an inside and outside, and it is 75 x 25. I have a complete butcher room, with hot water pot, feather picker and stainless steele tables and counters, plus a wrapping area with a vacumsealer. I have 3 comercial freezers in there also. This is also where I do my butchers of rabbits, beef and pork, lamb and goat. I do not butcher differant types of animals at the same time, so there is no chance of cross contamination. Also the entire room is scrubed down after each butchering session.

Yep. Me too. I would love to have a set up like that. But I don't do near as many as you. So I have to just do mine outside by the well house. As clean as I can. I would love to come for a visit and help out some time.

Candy and Kristin, this place was 37 yrs in the making of blood, sweat and alot of tears, alot of the equipment was either bought second hand, and some had to be refurished, or made by my late husband. Watch for butcher shops going out of business in your areas, and bargin them down on prices, you can get good equipment at a fraction of the cost of new.

Alee, they are $2.00 for 25-49 and $1.50 for 50-99, then only $1.10 for 100 or more. Not bad at all. And they look really hardy too.
