well... here is the picture! Let's see how many words we can come up with?

...here is my word, mouthwatering! I just came in from picking them! I am so thankful that I had the foresight of picking this variety for my yard! These are Navajo ..the thornless is such a blessing.. no more fighting with the thorns scratching me or hooking my clothes! Later this evening I'll be picking more on the other side of my fence!

Ooohhhh! Now what will you be doing with all those pretty berries? My hubby will be home this weekend and he loves blackberry cobbler. But I have never been able to make them like his mother's, which he loves. So does anyone have a very simple recipe to share?
I hope you enjoy yours!

... well Kris, I have rinsed them, then towel dried them then bagged them up into freezer baggies and now they are being frozen. I do this most of the time so we can enjoy them this fall and winter to turn them into cobblers which I am not very good at for some reason! I will still do that but this year I plan to create blackberry jelly for gifts to family at Christmas time! :o)

Kris, Does your DH like cake like cobbler or pie like cobbler? My DD makes one that is super easy, here is the recipe: 1 stick butter or margarine melted, 1 cup sweet milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup self-rising flour, 4 cups berries, peaches or whatever fruit you choose. Melt butter in 9 x 13 inch baking dish. In mixing bowl mix milk, flour and sugar. Add to melted margarine in baking dish. Add fruit, but do not stir. Bake at 375 degrees for about 40 minuted or until brown. Excellent served warm, topped with vanilla ice cream. Original recipe came from Southern Living

Ruth, I have made cobblers like that and they are so good and very easy. But his mother made more like a pie doughy cobbler. I do not like blackberries myself with all those seeds in them. I do like jelly. I will make it this way though since I know it will turn out and be good. Thanks.

right there w/ ya!
Only I brave the elements and pick the wild ones. My picking hand is pretty toughened up and I wear double layers to avoid the bugs and poision ivy
I just can't resist.... and can't stand to see such a prolific resource go to the bugs!
Have picked 120 pounds so far! Luckily the field was bushogged down to the ground, so walking around is great and getting to the berries is like cadillac picking!
the ones I am geting into now are about that same size. Think thumbpad size or slightly bigger!
And the big ones ARE sweet!
Enjoy! |

It's like this berry picking fever just over takes some of us, and we HAVE to be out there....no matter the berry.
BB's would be awesome of course in a pie or just mixed in w/ ice cream.
When our kitchen is back together I may try a pie w/ these and some of our raspberries.
Which BTW I have never seen a thornless raspberry variety. Interesting. |
