Help! My old girl got herself locked in the rec room in the basement and tinkled in there. Whole basement smells as a result. That paired with all this darn rain we can't get enough good dry air through to clear the air. I have used an awesome product from the pet store, but it is SO darn expensive and I needed the whole gallon last time. Any home remedies. I tried 100% vinegar but now the basement smells liked pickled cat pee. NOT pleasant and DH is ready to take her on a one way ride and frankly so am I. Help!

I hope someone can suggest a home remedy for you, but we've never found one that works. We generally have to break down and buy Nature's Miracle from the store - works extremely well. I'm hoping someone else has a better idea for you...and then I will steal it as well!

I dont know of anything else either. I am about the tear up the carpet in the office right now because our older girl had a UTI and had a few accidents in there before we realized it.

Baking soda, mound it on the spots and when it turns yellow, clean up and do it again, and again til odor is gone, cats will continue to pee on old spots if you don't get the odor out, especialy males.

Sorry to say I don't have a natural remedy that works as well as Woolite's Pet Oxygen (in a spray container that costs about $4.50 in the supermarket near the cleaning supplies). I have an older cat with bladder stones who needs yet another surgery and she urinates on anything that doesn't sit still. I use the Pet Oxygen in the laundry too, if she goes on a towel or bedspread. It really works, but I'm afraid to see what chemicals are in it! It is half the price of anything I get from the vet. Nature's Miracle, Just For Cats seems to be the most effective and most natural thing I can find. The baking soda has worked on smaller spots, but she piddled on a gym mat (DS bangs his head on the floor otherwise) and it got caught between the floor and the mat...ick! and the creases of the mat. Broke down and bought a gallon and will be spraying it everywhere in there today and opening all basement windows to get the air flowing now that it's dry outside. Nature's Miracle worked once before, but she is a sneaky and stubborn old bag, but I love her.

| try mixing 8oz hydrogen peroxide, 2 tsps baking soda and a squirt of hand soap. Use immediately and do not put in airtight container - it doesn't keep due to the chemical reaction. I use it all the time. If Sam has decided to spray the sofa, I apply it a couple times and it removes it completely. |

I would only add that a black light will help you locate the areas that need treatment. It will kind of glow where the animal has pee'd. Good luck, I too had a cat that was always within an inch of being put down due to litter box issues. Nothing smells as bad a cat urine!

Do these things work on dog pee too? My one doxie is 13 and sometimes has an accident. The other one is blind and doesn't get around well anymore. If I miss him jumping off the couch he can make a mistake too. The urine is in my one rug and I am having a heck of a time getting rid of it. It can kind of smell musky even after I use Natures Miracle. Plus it can get this like sticky feeling to it in the humidity. Good Grief! While I am at it, I have to ask has anyone else had trouble with doxies being little pee pots?
Thanks MJ
