Hey you guys!

So I no longer live on a ranch (former owner of Liberty Oaks Ranch in TX- it was fairly small but it was mine!!), and after wanting to move here all my life, we have now been in Montana for 4 years. Thing is, we live in a residential neighborhood now in a smallish house and I'm trying to overtake every bit of yard that my two kids aren't actively using with gardens. And last year, my folks sold THEIR little ranch in Texas and moved into our same Billings neighborhood! SO...

My mom named their house "Thistle Cottage" and did the cutest sign (I'll have to take photos to post) to hang on their front porch rail. She's got a cottage garden in front and will be planting some thistle-looking type plants (cardoon and stuff) to emphasize the "thistle" part!

I recently cut some willow from the Big Horn mountains and used it to make some wattle-style arches and ladders as plant supports. And the darn stuff has started growing, as it was pushed down into the soil to stabilize it! I'm thinking about naming ours "Green Willow Place" or something like that... Place? House? Chalet? (haha...)

Has anyone else named their home? It sounds a little bit Jane Austen without the benefit of an actual extensive property in England... but I think fun?? Sort of puts down more roots... and sounds better than calling it "the green house" or by our actual address (which is boring).

Anyone else? ~TJ

TJ- What a great idea! I don't think we will be naming our rental place, but I love the idea of making a willow arbor! I would love it if it grew! Will you help me make one?! :D

I know a woman who named her house Morningside Gardens, cause she likes her morning coffee by the garden. Maybe you could go with Green Willow Garden?

I lived in England for several years, and many homes, even the most modest, had names. I lived in Trehane Cottage, of Trevalga Farm. We call our little Arts and Crafts Bungalow, "Lynch Cottage" on invitations and things of that sort....I've not made a sign or anything, but I might :)

Oh, Angela, I LOVE Green Willow Garden!!

Now my only issue will be, getting The Mister to agree... maybe I'll just "do" a neat little sign and hang it. They say it's always easier to get forgiveness than permission! (grin) You just can't get these Wyoming cowboys to think that they need anything "twee". He's still annoyed at my Mary Jane's Farmgirl bumper sticker!! grin...

PS - Alee, I'd love to help you make one! I'm by no means an expert but it was pretty easy, with some jute twine and sharp clippers!!

Jonni, I lived there for a little bit too, and ADORED IT. I would move back there in a trice. But I digress, I love the idea of naming even a small cottage. I am kicking around ideas for my own little house. Oakhill Cottage Im sort of thinking, since I live on a hill amid an oak grove..

Yeah, Sarah, I'd go back in a heartbeat...

I think, given the name of our daughter, and our hillside full of Violet's in the Springtime (and the fact that we make and sell Violet Jelly), I might have to come up with something with "Violet" in the name :)

Yeah I may regret having let these willow whips start - we may be completely hidden from the street within 2-3 years! At which point I'll just re-post the sign out at our driveway, grin...

I think it is a wonderful idea to name your home- whatever "home" may be.. how sweet is that? Imagine walking down the street and reading all of the different names of your neighbors homes- much more interesting and personalized then just the plain old "house number" that was already assigned when you moved in!
Now you have my wheels turning....

You wouldn't have to read the name on my house - you could tell as soon as you drove by - - - "CAMP RUN-A-MUCK".

hahaha! Marilyn, that's funny!

Ok so when we first moved here 3 years ago, I wanted to call our little 5acre parcel, "Lavender Grace Farm"...then as time progressesd(2nd year), we planted an Oak tree...symbolic of our roots back in California...and were going to call our place "3 Oaks Farm" to represent, Hubby, daughter & me....but another year escacped us & we kept pouring $$$ into irrigation, soil, plants, gopher traps etc...Now I am thinking about naming it..."Laughing (insert picture of a Mule/Jack***)Ranch"! because at this point, ya just gotta laugh at all the money we have spent trying to get this place in shape! lololol!

The name of my place is "Somewhere in Thyme". I just wish I could live on a road with a name. I have friends that live in CO on Lone Elk Road, in CA that live on Rock Bluff Road. Me? I live on County Road 1250. How dull is that?

Belle (I love your nickname btw), it could be worse! Shortly after I moved away from very rural County Road 200 near Winchester, Texas - they renamed it Greasy Bend Road. Not GRASSY Bend, GREASY Bend. Hello? Who thought of THAT one??

I love all the names you are coming up with. I have one that beats greasy road! Just down the street from us is Chicken Dinner Road!

We have five weeping willows on our property and I love them. So I wanted to name our place The Willows (not real original - but I liked it). But because my husband makes wine from a neighbors grape he calls it Duck Lane Winery, since we live on Duck Lane. I'd still like to call it The Willows, think I should just sneak a little sign in?

I lived in Scotland for several years and any home more that 20 years old had a name. I had a friend with two small children that bought a 300 hr old farm house. She thought it was hysterical that the House was named Netherton of Balquahine. For those of you that don't speak Gaelic the second word is pronounced- Bal-Whine. She said the name was perfect for her kids. I have always wanted to love a house enough to name it but I am very unhappy here so haven't bothered. Someday soon I will have a house I want to name.

Beth - I used to live near Austin and went to Houston alot - I feel for you! That is one intensely-populated city. After Scotland, it must have been quite an adjustment!! I LOVE Balquahine, I've got some of those small children too!!! grin

Marlies - how about The Willows Winery on Duck Lane? Kinda long. Duck Willow Wine. Hmm. My Dad's Organic Gardening magazine (I think) had a reference to a place called Weeping Duck Farm (there was a story behind it). Yeah you're kind of stuck!

I call our spread Rabbit Hill" after the childrens book of the same name. I love that book and Our house is on a small hill and there are tons of rabbits. They can have the yard. My garden is fenced in with 3 sized fences. Rabbit fencing, smaller diameter fence and even smaller diameter fence. It works great IF you don't leave the gate open. Bonnie

We call our place Spring Hill after my husbands grandfathers creamery. It is 16 acres of beautiful wooded land with beautiful birds and wildlife. We are truly blessed!

Marlies,

I know right where Chicken Dinner Road is.... I have been trying to come up with a name for my garden, but it seems to suit to make a name for the whole place. Lazy Dawg comes to mind, cos I have two of them, Bubby Moo Farm, cos thats the dog that runs the house, yes, I am ashamed, as is my dog trainer. Wild Woman Gardens, cos , well I am... I'll have to think up something nicer....

The Unofficial name of our place is "Gilead Farms" from the hymn, "There is a Balm in Gilead." It seemed to fit when we bought the place, since its on top of a hill, but I feel a little odd calling it that outloud, so it's more of an "in my head" name.
