This is my first posting.
Chickie is a chicken that was hatched out by a muscovy duck late last fall. The duck tended to chickie for 2 days . The 3rd day I found poor little chickie flat in a corner a cold little lump. Well I thought that was the end of poor little chickie, but I brought her into the house to get a better look.
I noticed chickie was breathing, barely. I sat near the cookstove with chickie in my hands warming her up, I even cut up a bit of old flannel sheet and put wing holes in it to make her a warm little out fit, (I am a sane person ..really I am).
I live off the grid so I was trying to figure out how to keep her warm when I wasn't holding her. I called up a friend for ideas and she said she heard about people using jars of hot water to keep baby birds warm. So I heated up the tea kettle and poured hot water into 2 jars and put the jars into a couple cotton socks (unkownly donated by the man of the house) to keep chickie from burning herself.
I had to heat water every 3 hrs to keep chickie warm enough for several weeks.
Well I'm proud to say chickie is a full grown hen now. She even lays eggs. Well this is one chicken that won't be in the stew pot.

Every day I wake up is a good day

I had a dear friend in high school named Chickie. She was wonderful and it sounds like your Chickie is too! She certainly is repaying all your kindness! Welcome to the Sisterhood!

Thanks for the kind welcome. I don't have acess to the computor at my house but Fri and Sun . I am at my little gift shop in Dixfield Maine so those will be the days I'll be posting. I live a mixture of low tech and then I include a few modern stuff like a cell phone.I have wood heat and often cook on a woodstove although when the summer temps are high I'm not abouve using a gas grill. I have a propane fridge and my water is gravity fed from a spring so I have a well , indoor plumbing and a septic system like "normal people"
I've lived this way 20 plus years. At 52 I'm no spring chicken but I'm a long ways from an old hen!
