Barnyard Buddies:  I found...up date ... need advice  |

I have been noticing my favorite bantam hen has been less and less visible. She came ot honce or so a day and that was all. I could not find her nest but knew she had to have one. Well for two ro three days I could have sworn I heard chicks. But still no visual.
Tonight I found a small cllutch of eggs behind where some hat was, but that we had used. Well this hay was on top of two skids high stakes of skids. Anyway as we gathered these eggs we could see the little heads of the baby chicks under the skids. She has at least 8 babies! And is laying on more!!!!!!
I put some food down in the skids and she was warning me to keep back. But I know she will not leave these eggs right now and those chicks will be needing some food. I will put a small dish of water out tomorrow. I am so excited. She is a great little hen. What a great find.

I went out to check chicks and moms [bantys] and found my large free range hens eating a live [not any more] chick.
So I caught my hen and all her babies and put them in a cage. Then I went to get the othre banty hen who is all broody... She knocked an egg off the hay, it cracked and now we have a live chick hatching and no mom. I tried right away to get the other hen to care for it. Not gonna happen, she is all about her babies. The other hen, wont go back on her nest [which i now moved to a cage too]. SO any advice for carring for a hatching chick. I get them as 1 day olds. I know then need warmth. Any dos and donts??? |

How fun. Banty hens are the best moms! I need to watch my girls (all bantams) and pick a couple broody ones to set some eggs...they are such good mothers that I can give them a pile of eggs and put them in another separate pen and they hatch and raise those babies perfectly every time. Have fun with your new little family!

also, if you wait til the baby is dry and eating/drinking, a day or two, put that baby in your hand so it is protected, at night, in as much dark as possible, and put it under your moma hen, and 9 times outs 10, she will accept it as her own.

yes teresa is right on again. also you need to dip its beak in the water till it gets a sip. they have no mama teacher. feed her crumble or i should say it the chick and slip her in with mama. happy days on your farm sherrye

Yes, get it to drink and wait until momma hen has gone to roost with the ones she has, slip that new baby under her, she can't count, and should accept and raise it. I have done this with other chickens, always after they have gone to roost for the night, after dark.

Thanks ladies... I will remember the slipping hime under the moma at night thing. But for this littlr guy, it will be too late. He passed away lastnight. I let him dry up, and then started giving him water. But he was just so weak, I do not think he was ready for his egg to hatch. It so stinks, he was a naked neck chick! I hope to get another someday!!!
