Hi yall...my chickens are free range...goeverywhere you don't want them to be! Recently I've started an herb garden up against my house by my kitchen area...I have lemon balm, and three kinds of mint planted...are there ways of getting the chicks to stay away without having to put up a fence? They do their dust baths right in there and I am afraid they will damage the plants. Thanks:)
If you find out let me know! I have about 20 hens, 2 roos and 8 chicks and they are all over. I swear they think every time I dig a hole it's just for them. I am going to just put a pile of dirt in the middle of the yard with some weeds gorwing in it and they might stay in there.
The only thing I know to keep them away is to cage them up. And I am not going to do that. So I just chase them away when I see them in anything. It's a pain to do that though.
Ours free range as well and they seem to get into places that we have fenced to keep them out of. I have a group of Buffs that especially like the garden even though there are TWO fences around it!! I'm with Kris- I think if you're going to free range you just have to be ok with chasing them out or moving your plants. At least that's what I've found around here!

Try laying some chicken wire or other close knit wire over the exposed dirt. They like to dig at the dirt but wont like to dig at the wire. I have my garden fenced and they stay out of it but I planted a few things in pots at the front of my house. I have even seen them get in the flower pots! And we have 160 acres that they can free range!
