Does anyone raise rabbits for food? We show rabbits and get very attached to ours. I was wondering if anyone else had meat rabbits and what breed ect. How do you handle the butchering part? I am sure some Farmgirls get attached to their chickens and have a hardtime with butchering too. How do you handle it?
We raise New Zealands for meat. You just have to turn your emotions off for the butchering. I guess I look at it like they have given me a something back-meat!
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I have New Zealand/Californian crosses for meat rabbits, and when my kids were in 4-h we also had show rabbits (Dutch and Rex). We/I have never had a problem with butchering, and we never name what we are going to eat. Meat rabbits (and all other meat animals)are only handled as much as nessacary to insure good health. My breeding does and bucks are handled enough to keep them tame to avoid injury to them or us. As Karla said , you learn to turn off your emotions, or have someone else do the butchering off site.
