| Hello, I am the owner of 23 what were supposed to be hens. I wound up with 5 rosters out of the 23. They are plucking the tailfeathers out of the hens. I have tried hot peck, but that does not seem to work. Does anyone have any other ideas |

When that happened to me, I found homes for 4 of the roosters, but most would probley eat them. Good luck, Carol

You will need to find homes or stewpots for at least 4 out of the 5 roosters. In the mean time, try a product called "Bitter Apple", it has worked for me in several differant applications regarding dogs to horses, and I have a friend with a parrot who was a feather picker, and she isn't anymore, good luck...

sometimes feather pickers are needing a mineral or vitamin. are they getting 16 percent protein. a feather and an egg is 16 percent protein. they will eat each others feathers. then the butt gets pink and they peck that. teresa is right. roosters want to rule their roost. thats their way. we feed beef and pork fat to our hens. they love it and helps for nutrition. my folks always hung the rind from bacon in the hen house. it does help with pecking.just a thought happy days sherrye

| Can anybody tell me how to tell if my chicken have mites? two of them look like they are either getting pecked alot or they are doing it to themselves. We have 6 chickens and the two missing the feathers are the head chicken and her sidekick the bully. Or could there be something else going on with them? |

There is a great website called Backyardchickens.com. Chicken people are wonderful people and they will answer all of your questions. I turn to them when I have a question. It's folks like us who ask, answer and share chicken info.

Also,
Just want to say that I put my roosters on Craig's List. I have always been able to re-home them. Also, if you don't want them to be eaten(like me) call your local 4-H office and they can put you in touch with the local 4-H poultry club. Sometimes the kids will take them.

Hey Valerie. Welcome to the forum. I had a bunch of hens that went broody and ended up with about half of them roos. So me and the hubby are getting the one side of the chicken house ready and I will try to catch the roos and get rid of them. I have too many for the amount of hens I have and these new ones are all game roos.
Just catch them and separate them. Either sell them or butcher them when they get bigger. I want to sell mine so I can get more Buff hens.
