Hey all how does everyone else tell when your ladies are in heat....the AI guy says when I see the gloopy stuff that that's almost late to AI her well. He says that I should call him about 2-3 days before I see the gloppy stuff. How do I monitor her better for the best time to AI? Thanks!

Is she an "only" cow? It's hard to catch it if she is. The way I can tell is if they try to mount each other. Or in Mazie's case she bellowed for a whole day. And she tried to ride Roxie. I never saw gloopy stuff. Then it's every 21 days on the dot. So if she is bellowing then call your AI guy. If you miss it then wait 21 more days. Anyway, that's how I could tell with Mazie. Roxie should come back in heat the 13th.
I hope this helps. And be careful. I have heard of cows trying to mount people. That could be dangerous. Maybe someone else knows of different signs. These are just signs I have noticed. And I know some dairy people that watch for mounting.

there are test strips you can get , probally from your vet, and you just touch them to the vulva til they are damp, there will be a color chart that tells where she is in her heat, and your A.I. guy should have those strips...

My Maizy is the only cow except her calf. I never really noticed her being more vocal...she is always yelling at me for more food! Now Sassy(Maizy's 6 week old calf) is starting to moo at me a lot too! I'll try the vet to see if I can get those strips. She seems to be pretty regular...she had the gloopy stuff shortly after Sass was born. I'll be paying more attention to her vocality now to see if its different. I noticed the eggwhite gloopy stuff on either mon or tuesday I believe so she should be in heat around the 24th...Hopefully we'll catch it!

Wow, I didn't know they would come into heat so soon after calving. Shoot, now I have that to look forward to. Again. Yeah, my Mazie was VERY loud with the bellowing. And that's the ONLY time she does that so I know something's up. And it does only last 1 day and she's back to normal. So there is just that very narrow window of opportunity without a bull around to catch it.
With the calf just 6 weeks old, do you want to breed her again so soon? Just wondering. Are you milking her yet? Or do you milk her? I can't wait to try that with mine.

I sometimes milk cows for a guy to help him out and when we turn the girls out of the parlor, if any feel the "need" to try and come back in the parlor, thats an indication to us that she might be in or coming into heat. Also, like Kristin said, they may try to mount each other and bellow. I've seen and heard that. Stan has a cow he calls Trumpet, because when she's in heat, that's what she sounds like. Good luck.

Mona was very vocal and bellowed all day when she was in her first year after her first calf..but since then has been an only cow and very quiet. I have the toughest time telling when she is in heat..it is awful. This year she has a little Dexter steer pal (hopefully he will be an incentive for her to do cow behavior)and I am hoping she goes in heat that I can tell soon. I didn't know about the test strips but will sure be asking about that! I would like to have her bred AI this month or early next month.

Ya I was told by several dairy persons that its okay to breed them after 8 weeks...Maizy's calf will be just past that mark by the end of Aug. She was so onry tonight bucking and running her horns into the fence...she wasn't like that this am milking. I checked her vulva and it seems pinkish right now with a little white...how long until its more whitish in color? I also climbed up on the stanchion to sit on her backside (heard if you sit on them and they don't move its a sign of heat) she moved a little bit but not a whole heck of a lot. I wasn't gonna breed her until later in the year but I figure being here in Montana where we can have some pretty cold fall/winters that I should give the calf a good head start before winter. If bred this time around she'll be due sometime in May. Thanks for all your insight! You're my go-to gals;)

OH ya Maizy is in heat. At last nights milking she had a ton of egg white mucous and her vulva was completely pinkish. Yesterday my husband fixed the fencing to our pasture and she has been mooing all morning..almost constantly! I wanted to throw a pillow at her at 6 am she was so loud! LOL she just happened to graze by our window and kept up the mooing.
